WWYD- Go to work or not?

Your child needs an op, not a serious one, but one that requires a GA. They will be admitted to hospital at 7.30am and discharged later that day.

You have an 'as and when' job. You have been asked if you can work on the day your child is in hospital. You can see them into hospital but is unlikely that you'll be able to pick them up, though their other parent can.

You could do with the money you'll get paid for that day due to some unexpected bills eg car repair and school trips. You don't need the money to pay utility bills or groceries. Without the extra days wages you will still get the items you require but money will be tighter that month.

What would you do? Forfeit the days wages or go in? Working a part day isn't an option due to the job role.

This was the dilemma, that faced me earlier. I've made my decision, but intrigued what others will answer.

  • Family before work. Always :)

If I needed money that badly, I would borrow if any way I could :)

Personally, I would have taken the day off - because I would not have had my mind on my work and would not have been particularly productive/useful - and could possibly cause mayhem!

Making ends meet was a way of life - as was that often someone/something would move the ends - and never to my benefit!

If the other parent can be there for when they come out then I'd go to work. Sharing the load is what parenting is about.
  • Family first for me too... I would not be able to work for worrying so might as well be at the hospital 'just in case'...

Couldn't the other parent take a day's annual leave?

I'd take the day off, I couldn't sit at work worrying I'd have to be there while they were under and when they woke up.

It sounds like the other parent can pick the child up so it's not a case that if the OP couldn't then nobody could.

Yes they could. They could also work from home as the have more flexibility in their role.

    Child is ten.

Since worrying about child has come up. The job is a busy one, so not much time to dwell and there isn't too much that could go wrong that couldn't be rectified.

Initially I thought go to work after dropping the child.

I think though in reality nearer the op I would want to be around 'just in case'.

Also, what happens on a practical level if the op is cancelled at the last minute, which has happened recently to someone I know.
:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.
