I haven't read the whole thread (sorry) but I would be at the hospital all day with my child, not in case something happened, but I would want to be there when they woke up and with them until they came home. Nothing would keep me away.
When our daughter was 10 she had an operation and a hospital stay of 10 days, one or other of our family, me, her dad or grandparent was there 24/7 and we all worked, we just made a rota. We either slept in a spare bed or a chair.

Take it from me as the parent that "Was always at work".
I left my wife, to take our son to hospital aged 7 to have 7 teeth removed under General Aesthetic, and despite the fact that he is 20 years old now, I don't think she has EVER really forgiven me.0
