  • unfortunately didn't work for us ...we had a joint account and dh would just dip into it every day. Bottle of wine here, packet of cigarettes there. It ended up with an overdraft of £2k in one year  considering i never used it aside from to put my money into it to pay the bills, i was not impressed. He is actually useless with money and even after years in debt, and now having paid it all off I don't think he ever had a LBM !

  • Just been through the budget with a fine toothcomb ;) have rearranged a few things and have just transferred my first £75 of the month to the ISA :). Can't do anymore with what I currently have (should have been able to put £200 in by now so a little behind!) hopefully the tenant will pay what she owes very soon and I can transfer the money straight across to the isa. I am determined to get it up to £3k by 2014 (savings 2). Do you think this is a little optimistic ;) ??

You will get there. I completely empathise with OH situation.
For me it was like pushing water uphill. Oddly enough they're always happy to share in kudos of budgeting well and spending once there, whilst setting bear traps every step of the way

I'm coming back as a hermit in my next life. I'll find SB in a cardboard box by the roadside and cut out ex-OH forever.

He was very money saving with petrol. Told me the price has no impact on him at all as he only ever puts in a tenner at a time! :rotfl:

    Have a good day xx

Mrs. K. and I had merged finances since before we married (when we rented our first house together). Neither of us has had our own bank account since! :rotfl: My comment was not a criticism, I am purely interested in how others deal with finances (as I'm new to all of this and wondering if there is one way that is better than another).

I'm with DFW here as well.

I used to have a joint account with my husband and worked really well until his spending got out of control - when the current account ran out of money he would use his credit cards and so the minimum payment crept up and up and it was the family who lost out.

He has depression and he likes to spend to make himself feel better.

Then we moved to seperate accounts - he said he would only go 50/50 split on the bills which I looked after (even though I worked part time but I did have child benefit money) which worked well until his minimum payments on his credit cards were more than his wages:eek:

Luckily (?) he got ill a few years ago and now we still have seperate bank accounts but I control his money in his account and also mine in my account.
He is even more useless with money now and does not think ahead to bills etc.

His debts are on token payments and we are contemplating bankruptcy for him.

He works part time at the moment but the job is due to finish soon and then we will just live off my income which will be interesting.

I so wish we could just have a joint account but it would not work :(

Eager_Elephant: Wow, that really struck a chord with me. Of why I need to persevere, of how bad my problems could get should I carry on. :(

I too suffer with depression and used to spend to make myself feel better. Fortunately for me, it was often on non-depreciating assets.

However, unlike you Mrs. K. would not take over the finances; she'd leave without either of us sure of what would be best for our son as I mainly look after him but she has a very stable and secure job whereas I am self employed.

  • Alex you can do it :) This was one of the reasons for me taking over. DH went to the sand box in the sun (Afghan) and managed to spend £600 on one tour. How? He was in the middle of a desert. ??? . I still have questions over this one, but from the sounds of it he's not alone as many of my friends have had the same happen. Considering they only have a naffi shop and all food is free it's unbelievable in my eyes! ...yet funnily enough if you were to ask him his views he would say it was I that had the spending problem and it was I that had run up the debt! Usually because I have to buy the kids clothes, shoes, the food, anything for the house, all the bills, everything for the car...and well you get the picture. Because I spend on things like this he believes I have a spending problem *rolls eyes* ! Never mind i'll get over it as I know I haven't (anymore....perhaps years ago but that's another story lol)

Today would have been a NSD, had I not forgotten my nephew's birthday on Wednesday. Or should I make that remembered at the last minute..... ;) I sent him a present (already had this in so no cost there) and card (again already had in) and the postage was £3  not impressed!!! Also have spent all day in a classroom training to be a health champion :) it's tiring sitting there watching a powerpoint presentation all day (and boring!! :o ) I hate that approach to learning so was waning by lunchtime. Luckily lunch was provided to perk us up a little, unfortunately because it was a 'health' thing it was all healthy options :p haha. I could have murdered a deep fried mars bar by that point (joke..) :D

Tomorrow is my bike ride and also i'm going to try and squeeze yoga in in the evening too. I've been taking my bike out most days and the dog runs alongside me :T It's great we can cover 3 miles in under half hour, whereas it took me double that time to walk it and that's the distance he likes to do :) !

Checked bank, no money in there (well new extra money...) a bill is due out so have transferred the amount over to cover it and also rounded down all the accounts after interest was paid into them all (penny here and a penny there all add up ;) )

Childminded kids were late today, they arrived at 8.10am and they were picked up early at 5pm :T so nice easy day for me ;) ...dvd evening for me & kids atm (whilst I sneakily come on here :p ) Hope everyone is well :)

  • Yay for the easier Mondays DFW321!!!!! :j:j

For me (I'm very superstitious) - if Monday is a good day -then it means that the rest of the week should also be good!

I'm totally the same with the OH - if you asked him who ran up the debt he definitely wouldn't say himself!! :rotfl: I always knew he was bad with money but unfortunately through me wanting to please him and keep him happy (I'm older and wiser now!) I threw all my savings at him as well as his own money and surprise surprise that disappeared, then I got credit cards and before you know it - they were maxed.

Didn't help that he always had to get the best and most expensive of everything - take the BMW to the best garage in the country, buying a work suit? got to be acquascutum, buying work shoes? gotta be Paul Smith etc. . . and on top of that he was an alcoholic and had a drug problem

but now he lets me deal with it all because it means when we do want to do something - most of the time we can, and not because its on credit, but because we earned it!!! And that's the way the power-balance will work because it is successful!!! :money:

men, eh? who'd have em!!!! :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
    (kidding!!!!)

I manage our joint finances, I tell him to pay in x amount which is bills plus an amount of money. Then he has to use what he has leftover for whatever he wants. Although this month he's complaining because he needs to spend money on the baby things, but I had warned him 2 months in advance this was coming and to put money aside...he saved £50. Just reminded him of that in the car and he got all excited about having secret money. Hahaha men are funny :) He can't organise to pay his phone bill on time though, so he's never touching our finances by himself.
