Just get rid of the rats. Problem solved.0

At the end of the day, if you're a landlord, you should run it as a business, you can ask for a larger deposit and have regular visits. I've been on both ends, I'm a LL and allow pets and smokers and I have very little void periods.
I've also had to rent, due to my job and found it very difficult to rent places that will accept pets. Considering that probably about 45% of the UK has pets, it's a strange attitude to adopt, to exclude so many possible customers.
I shall be purchasing a couple of low end properties soon, it will be magnolia all the way and pets and smokers allowed. I doubt I'll have too much of a problem finding tenants.
That said, chinchillas are a pain in the @rse, they poop pellets everywhere and they especially like to do it behind the sofa etc. Sure, you might keep them in the cage during the day, but they get let out and then they do their business everywhere. If you say that you never let them out, then that is just cruel.0 -
Everyone saying how cruel it is to keep Chinchillas in a cage.... where else are you supposed to keep Chinchillas? Am I missing something?0

TBH, it isn't really something that you should keep as a pet. It isn't like a dog, that can spend all day roaming about the house and gets taken out for a walk twice a day and let into the garden.
The only reason I ended up with one (many years ago) is that some guy at work gave my soft touch wife a sob story about how he had broken up with his girlfriend and he was going to release it into the wild - he knew exactly what he was doing.
So we ended up with it. We got it a mate, but the original one (a female) attacked and killed the male, after a few weeks. So we put up the original one for free adoption and the guy that collected it said, you need to put them together in separate cages whilst they get used to each other. He seemed to know his thing. But it isn't something that I would buy, I don't believe in keeping things caged, it must be awful to be restricted like that. I hate seeing birds in cages, so wrong.0 -
I just wouldnt tell them.
As long as the rent is paid and house returned in the same condition, what I choose to do in the property is my business.0 -
My tenant moved in with 2 cats and an assurance to me that any damage would be paid for, and carpets fully professionally cleaned on termination of tenancy.
Cats got older and became doubly incontinent.
Tenant moved out because made redundant, and could no longer afford rent.
Or vets bills.
Or cleaning.
Or replacement carpets.
Or new doors.
Or fumigation.
LL left with over £1500 worth of damage.
With not a cat's chance of recovering the money.
I will never allow pets again.0 -
I actually came here today to start a thread re this, and me and my wife are looking at a possible rent. Its shocking the number of lets that are up that do not allow pets, it seems the majority. I try not to get wound up by it and just instantly start looking elsewhere. I try not to lose sleep over it.
Ultimately its down to the owner. If they wish to exclude so many potential renters then I guess that's their choice to make.0
