pets and landlords!!

gutted is an understatement

found the pretty much perfect rental house, in the place we want and under budget. landlord wants long term tenants, which we do too. everything fine and perfect, then landlord says sorry no pets!!
we have chinchillas, have had for over 10 years. never damaged a thing (house doesn't come with curtains etc so even if these got damaged somehow its our problem), deposit is £800, we offered even more, but landlord wont budge. so annoying, 2 caged animals that in 10 years have never damaged a thing, ever, and the landlord wont budge. to cap it off I even have cleaners working for me and have access to cleaning machinery worth ££££s which I use to clean my own home regularly, still wont budge. both professional people, in steady full time jobs (teacher and area manager for a govt contractor), but house could end up going to some messy people who smoke etc but don't have chinchillas! im gutted

All comes down to priorities then doesn't it?

Perfect house vs keeping animals in a cage!

I really feel for you. Nobody wants our pet lab either :( we wanted a house that came up that had to be redecorated from top to bottom as previous tennants had trashed it. The landlords let it sit empty for 6 months rather than letting it go to a family with a pet. Offered extra deposit, legal contracts to cover any repairs etc. Wouldn't budge. It is really difficult. We know how good our pets are yet people really don't want to take the risk. I wish you luck....
  • the owners are farmers and have the attitude of pets belong outdoors. well, apparently the husband cant see the issue but the wife wont budge. they are caged animals, not a dog or cat etc. I just hope the tenants they get mess them about!

    don't tell them
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

I let my tenant have cats. Landlords who won't budge aren't ones you want to have as landlords.

Similarly, my rabbits have trashed my carpets so I'm giving my landlady some money when I move out as an apology. I don't have to but I would feel awful to leave it like that!

I have to add, I do fully appreciate it is of course the landlord's house and absolutely their right to say no. I just know the feelings of frustration when so few houses come up in an area you need and you know that your pets are well behaved - and you are more than willing to sign a legally binding contract to say that you will cover any damage. Also frustrating when you hear stories of how some humans treat houses....!! But, yes, landlord's choice.

Thats a shame, I have a few pets, all well behaved, but of course, I cannot prove that, and if a landlord has had a bad tenant with a pet then it's all downhill.

It's getting harder to find somewhere with a good landlord that allows pets, the house I am in allows them, but doesn't have a garden, and took them a year to get rid of the previous tenants stuff, let alone leaving us with no heating for 3 weeks in January.

So your rabbits damage the LL's carpet and you don't have to pay for it? Where does that logic come from?
  • I get what everyones saying just think its madness. the style of house it is and the location means its only going to attract families, and all the families I know locally have at least 1 pet. I did debate not telling the landlord but don't want to mislead them. we have looked at 10-15 rentals this year and this is the only 1 to even question them, so frustrating

My understanding is legally all she could have done is kept my deposit? I guess from your response I might be wrong though!

Would be good to know in case my tenant ever trashes the place. ha
