Secure key comes to First Direct

Just setup my apps with First Direct's app based OTP.
As it happens I have three devices I regularly use for Internet Banking. An iPhone, a laptop and an Android tablet. First problem is the otp can only be set up on one mobile device. Second problem is that you can only do 'limited' Internet Banking on the apps.
So in effect anyone using FD needs at least two devices on the Internet with them at any one time. (Although limited banking is available with a single device).
OTP also introduces yet another password to remember. (and one that may not be used that often).
...and most operations now require a number of additional screens and password entries.
...changing status from an OTP device to a non-OTP device seems to mean you need to reinstall the app or clear its data.
OTP does have some security benefits against fairly complex attacks, but also some problems (for example repeated entry of credentials), so FD has gone from having a straightforward and easy to use system to one that is quite awkward to use (and in some respects less secure), but probably makes the bank less vulnerable to litigation.
I think if anything this is as bad or worse than Santander's text message based system.0 -
Unless of course you have a Windows smartphone
Self-inflicted wound!
(And commiserations if this was forced upon you by an uncaring employer!)I am not a financial adviser and neither do I play one on television. I might occasionally give bad advice but at least it's free.
Like all religions, the Faith of the Invisible Pink Unicorns is based upon both logic and faith. We have faith that they are pink; we logically know that they are invisible because we can't see them.0 -
I recently switched to first direct and they have been a complete shambles so far.
The digital secure key isnt working. (Got an iphone and mobile banking with 5 other banks, so no problem there).
Spend £10 in phone calls trying tp get it sorted, just told its a back end IT problem and to leave it with them.
A week goes by, nothing from them.
Send them an email, as i cant send a secure message without the key. Told them my switch date is tomorrow and i need full access by then and that i have heard nothing for a week.
They sent me a letter saying thanks for your complaint, we will reply in 15 working days!
So i complain about them taking too long, and they then want to take even longer.
They better a. Get it sorted asap and b. At least pay for my call charges, other wise i will be waiting for my joining £100, switching again with a leaving £100 then going to Halifax for another £100 sharpish.0 -
