Hi,
I live near Edinburgh. I got my piano free if I would pay to have it moved from the tenement it was in. 3rd floor...took a while to find men who could actually lift it, first professional piano movers (four of them) couldn't budge it!!
But might be an idea for people who can't afford a huge amount or who's kid is just starting out.
It's a work of art under the wooden case...all brass such a pity it's hidden.
Hope that helps a little.

Buying violins - have you seen these cautionary tales? http://www.elidatrading.co.uk/vileviolins.htm
It amazes me the number of people who think you buy an instrument before finding a teacher! But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,Had the whole of their cash in his care.

That sounds great - you should go & test some local shops both new & second hand, auction rooms etc. Keep a (yes another!) diary on your experiences... one for the local paper?
This sounds a great idea, I've got hardly any further with my article than when I said I was writing it on here. Not had a great past couple of days in all honesty though.Hi,

That's a great idea and one I had already thought of, so much so I've found a local piano mover.
However, whilst there is that odd bargain free / £50 piano, most are in terrible condition. Still, it'd get some kids started. 2018 totals:

Not this week, nor next, they've gone away. :jtheoretica wrote: »Buying violins - have you seen these cautionary tales? http://www.elidatrading.co.uk/vileviolins.htm

I'm OK. Sorry I've not updated much over this past week or so. On the plus side I've been busy with work, on the negative side I'm not convinced my parents and I are ever going to see eye to eye, even with them away on holiday things have been difficult. No further on with paying anything off, if anything we've overspent (not on anything exciting either).2018 totals:

Alex do your own thing then. If you parents don't agree that's their problem. My kids do things with their careers I don't agree with. My eldest extemely clever, good degree but working in a job in the public sector, that I would never of dreamt of him doing. (Am not running down public sector workers btw, was one myself).I always saw him as a high flier but he loves what he is doing. I would never make him feel guilty for it. As OH says I don't care what he's doing as long as he's getting up out of bed each morning and enjoying it and earning some dosh :rotfl: Life is too short to be doing stuff you hate and you're very lucky if you have a job you like doing, many aren't in that lucky position. You are doing a great job/tutoring/volunteering/bringing up your little boy, you have many strings to your bow! sod them :TTotal weight lost 6.5/73lbs starting yet again. Glad your doing ok, and sounding almost positive. You are a devoted son, they could not ask for more. As you say you are the only person they see. As for the rest of it, it is what it is, and you know it won't change, so just accept it. It doesn't mean you can go back to being child like. You are a man and need to make your own decisions. You will be an old man soon, and you can't be doing what mummy tells you then.
If they were less isolated they would see more family lives and alter their behaviour to the norm. But they have made their choices to not mix with the world. You can makes yours.
How about a once a week update on the money thing? Thought you had gone - to a happy busy place( glad it's that one) or a dark and brooding place (glad it's not that )0 -
Arsenalbarnie: Thank you. Unfortunately, they are trying to cause a lot of trouble for the moment.
bess: Thank you. The money situation is rather dire at the moment, we've had a few big, unexpected (well not that unexpected but certainly not planned for) bills on the house. So currently, we owe my business money on top of everything else. Fortunately, the business is not going to charge interest.
