  • Throwing leftover veg away is money in the bin!

It takes a little planning but is easy to solve. You just need the tweak the mindset a bit. 'What do I want for dinner?' becomes 'what do I have for dinner?'
So I will always think about whether I can make soup, ratatouille, omelette and salad, baked potatoes or whatever before going to the shop. The difficulty for me is when I have those things, but are to bone idle to do anything about it.

A while ago I bit of a food related light bulb moment. I was sat watching masterchef, eating toast for dinner :rotfl:and realised I was ridiculous! I now have some self imposed rules, it must be something my mum would consider actual food (not crisps and biscuits!) and include some veg. It involves more effort, but definitely makes me feel better and spend less, so I mostly steer clear of the frozen pizzas now :)

Planning is a bit of a problem to me :rotfl:. We have been known to throw some vegetables into rice, so do not throw everything away.

This is probably quite bad but I consider soup, omelettes and baked potato as lunch time things! Mind I have always liked a small but hot meal for lunch and a bigger hot meal for dinner.

:rotfl: Re. your lightbulb moment; I've been there. Also had one recently about takeaways - they are not going to become a regular thing again!

  • They may not be enough on their own, so sometimes there are odd combinations. Adding chips, or a bowl of something baked with custard often helps.
Although to be fair that generally helps anything, at any time :D

Omelette, salad and chips - not had that in ages but used to be something I enjoyed as a child when on holiday!

Bowl of something baked with custard does indeed help anything - you aren't the only one with a sweet tooth. ;)

I will have a look. :) Not sure I could even remember the spot checks. :rotfl: Maybe the threat will be enough!

    Hello there,

I was wondering where you'd got to! I hope your mother is on the mend.

Thank you, yes it's definitely worth it, I am quite looking forward to being debt free.

Hi, I have been catching up periodically but haven't had much time to type useful responses :o

Sadly, she is not good as she has a rare, incurable condition but has a few months left so we make the most of now. @ 74 we didn't expect her to go first (out of all the parents / step parents) as she is the healthiest out of all of them and has never had an unhealthy vice of any sort.

The only advantage a takeaway has is no prep/ washing up but the quality of the ingredients, cooking oil etc is going to way at the bottom of the quality scale. Most Indian takeaways seem to use the same bought in commercial sauces as well so you aren't even getting a 'chef' meal anyway.
We gave them up when we were crunched and found that a glass of wine and both of us prepping together threw together a meal in under 15 mins.

Our favourite default was spaghetti carbonara using good quality bacon, bit of cream and cheese and salad.
I make sure we always have basics in the fridge cupboard now and pop online late at night for a delivery next day if we run short of anything before I do farmers mkt on Sunday.

Funny thing is after 5 years, when we moved back home, we ordered from our local one and it made both OH and myself quite sick afterwards...too much salt and that hydrogenated long life oil they all use I think.

I'm so sorry to hear about your mother. :( Really does put into perspective that life is far too short.

Mrs. K. and I usually prep meals together and thought we were the only ones! You get farmers markets in London?

I'm fairly sure I have at least a few food intolerances which only seem to get worse from eating takeaways and sometimes even things prepared at home. However, that hasn't seemed to stop me so far. :o

    Wednesday 20th November, 2013.
    Day 81.

    Dear Diary,

This entry is going to be quite short as I'm not much feeling up to writing up a report on a quiet day.

I shall start with the positive news that I have began the eBay trail again, putting two items on there today which should hopefully raise some extra money to go towards the debts. Also, our car is here so we are for the short term a four car family.

However, for the most part, I have not had a good or productive day. My mother and I appear to be at loggerheads again after her telling me that my wife and I were irresponsible to have a planned child at such a young age. Apparently, I must have been "swapped at birth" and have brought her "nothing but shame". Sometimes I wonder why I bother. Oh well, at least Mrs. K. and I are on good terms and our son seems to be on his very best behaviour. Tomorrow I have another counselling session which I am already not particularly looking forward to.

    Summary:
    +£25.00 Music Teaching.
    -£20.00 Petrol - Triumph.

    Yours Faithfully,
    Alex.
