Surname after marriage?

  • Don't listen to me cos I'm an old cynic but leave your name as it is. It costs a fortune and a lot of time and effort to change it back in a few years

    Treasure your own identity.
  • I've been married twice and changed my surname both times (about to marry for the 3rd time - yeah I know, but I love the taste of wedding cake) so currently on my 3rd surname. A few years ago while on my way to a job interview I lost my ID documentation, which was my birth certificate in my original name, my passport in my 1st married name (never changed it as didn't need it) and my driving licence in my 2nd married name. I had a very confused PC phone me asking why I had ID in 3 different names, took ages to convince them that I wasn't up to no good. Maybe this time I will just keep the name I have now when I marry!
  • I've been married 11 years and never really bothered changing my name fully. My driving licence has married name, almost everything else is maiden...if I am asked I just explain I have never changed my name...never been an issue so far. My 6 year old knows I have a different name (as do most mothers at her school) and DH has no issue.
    Simple!

No it doesn't if it is a divorce.. you go through exactly the same process with your decree absolute as you did your marriage certificate.. you don't need to change your name by deedpoll if reverting to your maiden name it is always your name .. you can be called anything you like without any monetary outlay.

I loathed my maiden name... divorced the adulterous cretin so feel wrong using his name.. so now I don't feel like I have any name that is mine :( I don't know what to answer when people ask my name or I have to write it down.. I can't see me ever getting married again so I am stuck in a nameless limbo

You're right to a point but you do have to pay out for a new passport etc. it's a hassle too as each institution has to see original documents which makes it drawn out.

I didn't want my maiden name so used my Grandmothers name instead so I needed a deed poll

I love my surname (mother's maiden name)!! It's quite unusual and as myself and my cousins are all female if we all got rid of it it would slowly cease to exist :( no way I'm getting rid of mine!

Just change your passport when it expires no need to change it until then.

On your wedding your wife will become your surname.

That's not true in the UK. Your name won't change unless you request it.

I actually loved my maiden name. I hate my married name my first name and new surname are too alike in spelling so it sounds iffy.

OH couldn't take my name though because it made him sound like a tin of paint his name is Matt and my old surname was a colour

I have a friend whose name is Matt Black. I don't believe it's caused him any issues!!!
