Surname after marriage?

Hi,

How does it work?

Do you need to do a deedpol to change the name or does the wedding certificate do it?

By that I mean, would my wife to be have to go to deedpol to change her name to change the passport ect... or is the name change for her automatic with the wedding cert?

(I don't mean on the passport, I know each place has to be notified and that the UK passport agency wouldn't miss a chance to charge! lol)

The way the laws are worded a marriage certificate is sufficient proof for a change of surname for the wife. However I believe that if the man wants to change his then a deed poll/declaration is required.

I ghaven't got a clue what happens with same sex marriages though.

Best to get at least 3 copies of the certificate so u can keep one safe at home while some companies insist on seeing an original copy.

On your wedding your wife will become your surname.

No-one has to change their name on marriage.

Some people do; some don't; some keep their own name at work and use the new surname socially.

For a woman, the marriage certificate is all you need. It should be for a man too but some firms get awkward about accepting it.

Yes copies of the marriage certificate is all you need.

Interestingly my husband & I decided to include my maiden name in our married surname as I'm last of the line and was sad to lose the name, so we both adopted both names.

We checked and were advised that we didn't need to do a deed poll. The law is satisfied that it's what we are known as. We just wrote and informed all who needed to be informed.

Eg; My surname Smith and his surname Jones. We made our married surname - Smith Jones.

Not true at all! If a woman doesn't wish to change her name, she need not do so. There is nothing 'automatic' about marriage changing their name.

    Only if she wishes.

And she can use both her maiden name and married name for different things.

    Up to her.
