There is a good chance that two adjoining houses are on different mains phases. This can result in a voltage differential, in the event of a fault, of 415V.

Another danger is that neighbour A can switch his power off at the mains incomer but still have live kit due to the connection from next door

It is never a good idea to have equipment connected in any way to more than one phase unless it is designed for it

  • Thanks for the replies . I have called sky to see what theysay about dish sharing and they tell me its quite a common thing to share a dish.
They will treat the dish as brand new and will put warranty on it as if it was a new dish.
They said there should be no issues with the service and will work as normal like we have or own dish .

The cables need to be earthed, check 17th edition Wiring Regulations.
And the next problem will be which earth to use. There can be a large PD between the earth in house A compared to house B as the only common point is probably hundreds of feet away back at a distribution transformer.

Even earth spikes 6 feet apart can have a voltage difference between them

I'd want this in writing before proceeding (and that's without the electrical issues which have been highlighted)
  • Sky engineer showed up yesterday all fitted and working with no issues using next doors dish and a written warranty for the next doors dish. Thanks for the scaremongering replies

I didn't post any of those. Exactly what does the "warranty" say?
  • scaremongering directed at the know all posters not anyone in particular

The warrant basically states that the dish we recieve our services from is covered for 12 months from the date of my services being activated blah blah blah

  • I wouldn't share a dish with any neighbour, for no other reason than it would reduce the number of connections available for my own use. In addition, who now owns the Dish if things go wrong outside warranty?

Should the dish fall and maim/kill someone (admittedly fairly improbable), it might be an interesting issue as to whose insurer would be liable for 3rd party injuries?

The dish is sighted on the ground on a scaffold pole about 6 inches of the ground so no fear of it falling and hurting anyone.

the installation guy says another 2 boxes could be run from the dish alongside the other 3 boxes.

Everything is working fine on both sides with all services working fine.

The alternative to sharing a dish was to have a 20 foot tree cut down as that was blocking the signal from the only place we could sight a dish without breaking local planning rules i.e no sky dishes in the fabric of the building

like i say everything is working ok so thanks for all the input
