Hi
We ordered sky the engineers came yesterday and we cant get a signal from the only place we can sight the dish. So the engineer suggested we hook up to our nieghbours dish with thier permission.
the nieghbours dish is about 4 yrs old and out of warranty so what happens if the dish needs repaired or replacing would we be liable for a share of the cost ?
Was also wondering about the legal issues if we had a fall out with them would they have the right to demand we stop using thier dish ?
BTW we get on preety well with them and they have given permission to share thier dish

Well, it would be fair enough to help with the cost if the dish needed repairing.
And yes, of course they could demand that you take your 'feed'down.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
You would be giving them a brand new dish on their wall, and you would get a feed from the LNB as the installer would replace theirs, making it your property on their wall. It is a win win all round.0

I recall in the past when this issue has been raised that there is a potential problem with doing this. If you and your neigbour both have feeds from the dish there can be a electric feedback issue (or something like that) which could damage both of the boxes. Sorry I cant be more specific on this but it has been discussed on here before so I expect someone will be able to expalin it better!

I'd be insisting that the installer put a brand new dish up and you share your dish with the neighbours rather than the other way around!
As you say, if anything goes wrong with the old dish it will be out-of-warranty.
Do remember that if you both want multi-room, the number of sockets on an LNB are limited.
Never heard of any "electrical feedback" issue. The dish receives the signal and sends it to the decoders below.0 -
I had a Sky"engineer" come round and tell me that where I wanted a dish sited it wouldn't get any signal.
Phone a local installer he fitted one no problem.
No idea why the Sky bloke couldn't install it.0 -
Some of them want an easy life and won't (or can't) do anything remotely out of the ordinary. No idea why the Sky bloke couldn't install it.
The only problem with using an independent installer is that Sky won't recognise the warranty since they won't have supplied the equipment. The install won't be free either.0 -

At the time my install was free, which came as a pleasant surprise.
And it was covered by the Sky warranty.
Maybe things have changed nowadays0 -
Independent installers don't fit for free and any warranty certainly does not come from Sky. Since this has always been the case, either you called in another Sky installer or your memory of the details is inaccurate. At the time my install was free, which came as a pleasant surprise.

Certainly never heard of this, but equally I've never heard of a Sky installer offering to fit another customer to the same dish!Kurtis_Blue wrote: »Communal systems, which this will be, need to be earthed if they are joining separate property's. Indeed, it's certainly nothing I'd countenance myself if offered it.Kurtis_Blue wrote: »Nor have most "installers"
You may remember I paid an independent to do the job and he put the dish on the chimney stack which Sky refused to do.0 -
My first "installer" came round when I ordered from Sky.
He installed nothing.
The second who was an independent installer that I phoned and arranged to come round, installed it, set it up and charged me nothing, all the paperwork was from Sky, which is why I assume it was covered by their warranty.0
