Help with consumer rights??

I purchased a white knight tumble dryer on tuesday and it was delivered on Friday. I have tried it twice since and on both occasions it took over 3 hours by which time the clothes were still soaking wet. I want to get the machine sent back and get either a different model (my friend has a different model and it is fab) or a refund to go elsewhere.

I paid by credit card.

What I would like to know is my rights and what I can realistically request.

You can request (and expect) a full refund if the dryer is faulty. Is it a vented type or condenser?

Just make sure you are putting the right loading in, most tumble dryers will dry about half of the wash in their given time. so a 7Kg wash, you should only really attempt to dry 3.5KG

Did you open it during the running at all to see if it actually warmed up?

Is this a load that has been spun in a washing machine?

Not that it matters - but if it isn't warming up at all you'll know that it's definitely faulty.

Retailer should repair, refund or replace. Let's hope that it's a replacement or a refund, given it is new.

  • Are you sure your washing machine spin cycle is working as well as it should? Clothes shouldn't be 'soaking wet' after the spin cycle - if the spin isn't working right and the clothes are going in the dryer too wet that will affect the performance of the dryer.

Does it have temperature control of any sort? Some do a cool dry so could just be a setting

As neilmcl says, you should be able to get a full refund. Tell the retailer it's faulty and you want a refund. If they argue, point out that you are rejecting it as per your rights under the Sale of Goods Act.

    Thanks for all the replies!

The tumble dryer does get hot and the clothes are coming out hot but no more dry than if they had been in an extra spin cycle on the normal washing machine.

I have checked it is on full heat and all the settings are correct. I am worried they will want to come and fix it rather than replace it. Can I refuse a repair and expect them to refund and come and collect it?

P.s it is a condenser dryer

Unfortunately, no. The retailer can offer three remedies under the Sale of Goods Act; repair, replace or refund.

Retailers usually offer the most cost effective (for them) remedy.

You need to contact them and see what they offer.
