Setting up the DVD recorder to work with Sky+ HD box & the telly?

  • The HDMI cable is from the Sky HD box to the TV, that is needed, you dont want to be using a scart lead from a Sky HD box.

it's been a while since I've recorded onto a DVD player from Sky, but when I did i had to run the Sky box through the DVD recorder as I couldn't just record it from the TV.
The HDMI will more than likely be taking the sound to the TV which is what i was thinking on my first post. I've had a similar issue with Sky+HD and and AV receiver; I plugged the receiver into the Sky box using an optical cable (the same way i used to before HD) and got no sound. The only way you can do that is to use a HDMI receiver.... so this could be similar and like MoneyIneptitude said, you'd need to remove the HDMI to test it out.
  • when did i say it did? i said the HDMI cable may taking the sound from the Sky box to the TV
  • That's why they need to take the HDMI out of the equation to see if the sound comes back without it. As i mentioned earlier, I've had problems in the past with HDMI 'stealing' all the sound. All they need to do is disconnect the HDMI so Sky is running on scart through the DVD recorder, and test it. If they get sound then we know where the issue is, if they still have no sound then we know it's not that... but it's only going to take 5 minutes to test it.
  • Right, let's clear a few things up....

    * First one is i was mistaken. I was going off memory, which is terrible. There IS audio coming through when the DVD picture is showing (input is: AV1), however the audio that comes through is the Sky channel that's on. So, apologies for the misinformation.

    * All cables ARE seated properly.

    * I really don't see how the HDMI cable could be the cause of the problem here. I say this simply because before my mum moved everything, the Sky box & the TV were connected by a HDMI cable - & that's when everything worked properly. So if they were connected beforehand via HDMI & they still are, i don't see how the cable could be the cause.
Either way i disconnected it & it didn't solve anything. Obviously when wanting to select the Sky picture, i couldn't. The Sky audio still came through though.

You haven't cleared up anything I'm afraid. First you said the problem was no audio and now you say there is audio?

So what exactly are you without?

    Sorry...how haven't i?
First you said the problem was no audio and now you say there is audio?

You are correct. Originally i said one thing but now i say another, but more than this - i explained WHY the change of information.
So what exactly are you without?
But i said in my previous post, so i'm not sure why you don't know??

    To say it again ....

    * The information i gave in my opening post is incorrect.
    * The opening post was based on what i could remember...
    * ...which was incorrect
    * The last post from me is the correct information as i've just been into the room to try everything out.

I really don't see how the last post from me couldn't possibly clear things up - it tells things exactly how they are - how i made a mistake, why it was made, and what the situation currently is.
  • Still as clear as mud..
  • Well sorry then but i don't know how to put it any simpler.

What bit are you struggling on & i'll have another go at explaining?

Can you clarify what you are trying to do with the DVD Recorder? Are you trying to record something or are you trying to play either a DVD or a recording when you have this sound issue?

If recording from the Sky box, then choose AV1 on your TV to see what's happening and also choose AV1 as the recording input on the DVD Recorder. Remember that you can only record the Sky channel that is currently on the Sky box - you cannot watch another Sky channel.

If attempting to record from Freeview channels (assuming it is a digital DVD Recorder) then select AV1 on the TV and the appropriate Freeview channel on the DVD Recorder (note this will not be AV1 as the input). Sound should then change to match the Freeview Channel.

If attempting to view a DVD, put the DVD into the DVD Recorder and press Play. Sound should then match what you are trying to watch from the DVD.

If it's an older Analogue DVD Recorder, you will not be able to record anything other than Sky but only from the Sky channel that the Sky box is tuned into.
  • Not trying to be awkward or anything here, but what's STB? I'm guessing the S in that means Sky box, but TB?

As for analogue/digital - how do i tell? The front display is digital as it has the clock on if that helps? It's an old unit, probably about 2006 or so at a guess?

As for what we're doing when the problem occurs - just simply trying to play a DVD.

As for recording - i don't think it's needed to be used as a recorder any more. I think it was bought in before the days of Sky+, or around the time it was launching maybe? Either way we didn't have Sky+ i know that much. It was used to record Sky channels to DVD. Now that we have Sky+, we don't need the recording side of the DVD unit .... so it's just used as a player and not a recorder any more.
