After a bad few days Nana has demanded that they stop forcing her to wake up, so she has had all treatment withdrawn, at the moment she's getting morphine for the pain but no other medication.

I feel utterly lost as I'm down South dog sitting for my friend this week but I also know that me being there will make no difference.

    What treatment would that be?

Have there been any reasons given for the withdrawal of the treatment? If it's not in the patient's best interests, then the hospital (and doctors) have put themselves on very shaky ground.

Spitting the dummy out because the patient won't take things at the exact time the doctors want them to, is not a good enough reason.

They'd tried all the med combinations they could for her heart and none of it was controlling her condition, every time she had an episode she was waking up after being shocked weaker and more confused and upset.

But she's been saying for weeks she wants to just go to sleep and not wake up, I know my Mum and Aunt sat down and discussed it with the consultant as she'd requested a DNR when she first went in to hospital.

From what Mum said she's not recieving any of the meds she's been on for the last 8 years, but there have been that many I've no idea what they were for.

Its very hard when a family member decides theyve had enough, My Gran went thru the same when she got to 96. Her quality of life was non existant, She always said she was tired and didnt want to wake up, It was so hard to hear at first, but as her health deteriorated we realised how serious she was about not wanting to go on.
It almost felt as tho she was waiting for us to give her permission to let go of life .... So hard, but after she passed, she looked so relaxed and pain free. It kinda made me realise that death is not something to be scared of when you make it to a ripe old age.

I hope your gran doesnt have to suffer, and the doctors (and family ) can respect her wishes.
    xx

If your nan had no evidence of confusion or a confirmed diagnosis of dementia or no cognitive impairment then she is in charge of her care. Which means as heart-breaking as it is, your nan can choose to refuse further treatment and there is nothing the doctors, nurses or your family can do except support her and help her be as comfortable as possible.
    :undecided

I know that is probably not what you want to hear and I am sorry that you are so far away. The only thing you can do is support your family at this time but some people can find that really difficult as it is literally just sitting and watching and waiting. (I know that I would be one of those people).
    :(

Thinking of you and your family at this awful time scubaangel.

    Thanks guys

Mara she's ready to go and be with my Grandad, although she has said when she sees him she's going to tell him off for leaving her so long ago - sounds like they're going to end up fighting like cat and dog in the afterlife just as they did here!

Stewby until now she's always had her mental health, its the one thing she has had which is why none of us wanted to object to the DNR originally, and I think why the consultant wanted to talk to both Mum and my Aunt as well as Nana to be sure that her family agreed with Nana's wishes before anything was done.

All my family are bad at sitting around doing nothing, which is why I'm still down south dog sitting until they want me home - just made tentative arrangements with my friends to meet up Sunday morning to go to the Cenotaph.

In money saving news I've just been paid 5p to buy a small bottle of coke zero and a bag of chocolate coins. The coins I had a voucher for and the coke was a shopitize offer for £1.20 cashback but only cost £1.15 in store.

    Well I'm back north.

Had a really nice day out on Sunday, attended the Service of Rememberance at the Cenotaph in the morning with some former military friends and their friends. Got back out to Surrey at half nine and drove back, got home about 1am.

A little bit disappointed in myself as I think one of the guys there was interested in me, he's relatively attractive and we got on but as he lives in London I didn't ask for his number although I now wish I had done - apparently being sober I think too much and don't have the spine to make an excuse to swop numbers with people.
