This was the one where they found my CV on a recruitment website so today was an informal meeting the deputy manager and having a look around the place to find out the kind of thing you usually see before applying for the job. The one down south is a week on Tuesday.

You're obviously in demand. Bit of a sod's law given how long it took you to find work in the first place.

I know a few months ago I wouldn't have thought twice about it!

At the moment am torn as to if I get a second interview I should go for it or not (aside from the fun and games which would be involved in my getting a morning or afternoon off!). I suspect given where it's located I'd need to move closer fairly quickly as the easiest routes involve a choice of congested motorways or the third goes through town centre, it's a similar distance from Dad's house as I'm driving to work now so I reckon it'll take me at least an hour when it's busy given my lovely pretty rural drive takes me 25 to 30 minutes with traffic issues only on the last 3 miles of the route. But although it's nearer to the urban sprawl of Manchester it's still an area with lots of green within 5 or 6 miles of the place so I'd be able to find countryside to live near and avoid the motorways on my way to work.

The person I saw today did say that she felt that having met me I have the skill set they're looking for and would likely interact well with their customers and existing staff - apparently my being aware of customers in the store while she was showing me around and moving out of their way rather than expecting them to go around me while she was explaining things was impressive, I thought it was common courtesy!

    What about bus/rail links there?

Me too! But I'm the sort of person who gets out of the way of shop staff when they're carrying stuff, working under the premise of "You're carrying stuff and I'm not..."

And it's not like I'm a people person...

The nearest station to the site is 3 miles away so probably not practical as it's not the direct line from my local station, and buses are even worth thinking about from where I live now - we have one per hour up the main road but it'll be reduced to 3 per day from next month. So not the most practical options.

As we've previously discussed nor am I, I figure if I move people won't gormlessly walk in to me and annoy me even more than they do by simply exisiting, but I couldn't exactly say that in an interview situation.

You must really live in the sticks there then. Otherwise your local bus companies are exceedingly poor. Three a day is not a lot.

I tend not to have that problem as I (as my mother puts it) make a better door than a window. Even small children manage to avoid it...usually...

It's the latter, although it's not helped by the main road the housing estate is on is considered a secondary route between towns by my local council, so we're pretty much between two looping routes run by two different bus companies in two different towns. Both of whom have decided the linking route is not financially viable anymore so are cutting services to the bare minimum.

Another day at work barely survived. Very busy and if I heard one more complaint about the speed of service I was ready to down tools and walk out.

Apparently it's my fault I've not recruited anyone for our vacancy, despite having only had one applicant who had 30 years admin experience, and no food handling experience at all. But yeah the lack of applicants thus lack of new staff to relieve some of the pressure is clearly all my fault, as was the fact that noone bothered to place an order mid week for delivery Friday. I should have known they'd not bother and ordered extra everything so there was enough to last me the weekend when I arranged the deliveries for friday last week....yup all my fault I didn't think to plan 10 days ahead.

Although its probably a good thing I've not had to interview anyone am pretty sure that telling them their customers are inconsiderate halfwits who need shooting wouldn't make the job appeal!

Have you been talking to your area manager again?

If they have food experience, they probably already know this...

Talking to? Good lord man don't say such things, area managers don't speak to the likes of me....nope that was all comments from customers during the day.

True but if I then expanded on the other problems I have there that I need my staff to be able to deal with as well that ought to have anyone with an iota of sense (common or otherwise) running for the hills!

Now you know why they were so keen to have you in as manager level...
