Bought a pair of walking shoes from Amazon about twelve months ago and they were supplied by Sports Direct. Shoes arrived complete with mug, didn't notice if charged the extra £1, but one of the lace holders was ripped off. Contacted Sports Direct who told me that I would have to pay return postage so contacted Amazon who raised a full credit immediately. Now have a mug that I use as a paint pot for touch up jobs and a repaired pair, thanks to superglue, of walking shoes, result I think.

I have just had the same thing happen, a mug and a magazine added to my basket without permission and charged £1 for them! Also paid extra for next day delivery and I'm still waiting! Shocking service!

If/when you get your order, you should contact SD and point out to them that what they are doing is now illegal and that you wish for the payment for the mug and magazine to be refunded.
The Consumer contracts (information, cancellation and additional payments) regulations make this opt out of paying for items illegal.

I sell online gift products and offer gift wrapping for an additional £3. I make this clear at the checkout and in order to facilitate the customer experience, ask them to tick the box if they do not want the gift wrap. As I am not pre-ticking the box, can I continue to do this?

    2. No. The ban is not on pre-ticked boxes per se, although this has become short-hand for the principle. More properly the prohibition is on any practice which makes the additional payment the default option and where the consumer must act to avoid the payment. So in the case of the gift wrap, in order to avoid this optional additional payment, the consumer would have to act i.e. tick the box. This would therefore breach the regulations

That is not correct, if the goods are faulty then the seller is liable for return postage. What they might have meant was for you to post them back to SD and they would refund you for it. But I doubt it.

Incidentally I had an excellent pair of Trespass walking sandles that lasted about 5 years and many miles before falling apart, I superglued them back together and got another 2 years out of them! Best sandles ever!

The mugs are handy pen holders or plant pots.....

yay they’d received a ‘free’ mug (I think if they check their invoice they’ll find out otherwise).

Every order I have ever placed with SportsDirect.com has resulted in me receiving a free mug. I always check and keep my invoices too and there has never been a charge for it.

I had some Birkenstocks in my online basket for a while before deciding to buy.
They kept adding the mug at a charge of £1 but I just kept deleting it.

When my order came, they had included a mug but hadn't charged me.
I took it up to the charity shop.

It makes sense to do a final check or your order before you hit the 'pay' key - regardless of what goods/services you are buying.
  • The same happened to me, not happy at being charged £1.00 for a mug and magazine that I had not ordered. To top it the mug was in x3 pieces when it arrived due to insufficient packaging by sportsdirect. Complained to customer services demanding refund of £1.00 + packaging as 60%. Weight of packaging was the mug and magazine that I had not ordered. Automated reply will investigate within 1_5 days. It's the principle.
  • I get a mug every time i order and never paid, I always untick and get a free mug anyway
The same thing has happened to me, I swear they must have a massive warehouse of the things and desperately want to shift them.
I don't use my sports direct mugs very often but they do come in handy when you've got a handover and need a large quantity of hot tea, asap.
