If you're middle aged you're going to look a bit silly in it, I say you should be 30 and under to drive it. If you're middle aged and driving a mx5 then it's a big statement that your career hasn't worked out for you.

This is a total wind-up. No-one actually thinks this way do they?0 -

Sorry but statements like that are just a bit silly & say a lot about personal material attitude. I drive a £500 xantia that runs on veg oil at the moment but actually earn quite a lot thank you very much.Has my career not worked out well?
Most of the money I spend goes on other pursuits like flying, biking and holidays. Don't take this as an insult but please try not to judge people based on appearances or belittle them simply because they *might* not have matched your own ambitions in life. That's a bit too much Daily Mail really.
You'll be getting a personalised number plate soon if you carry on like that0 -
Its the fact that it DOESNT have a girlie reputation but you think it does that we're trying to correct.
What to you is a "girly car"? Think we need to get back to basics on this one.
Personally, many small/ "cute" cars (SLK, Z4, MX5, Mini, Beetle, Ka, 500) are girly. It is no judgement on their performance, how much fun they are to drive etc.
Whenever you read a thread on girly cars the MX5 is almost always listed as one of the examples. Seems there are a lot of guys here that are concerned about possibly appearing emasculated by the fact they happen to like a girly car. Personally found driving the wife's Mini is good fun and had no issues with people saying its a girly car because it was and the fact I find it fun didnt threaten my sense of gender or sexuality. Guess the mid life crisis makes some guys insecure about these though.0 -
I borrowed a friends Mk1 when he went on holiday, I couldnt give a monkeys if others thoughts it was girly as I loved driving it.
Such a rewarding little car to drive, it put a smile on my face everytime I drove it.0 -
Personally, a middle aged chap driving one says to me divorced and on the look for some 'companionship'
Either that or they want a fun weekend or track car as said.
A car is only 'girlie' if you think of it that way. I'd have no problem driving one but then I am comfortable with my hetrosexuality. I would suggest it is those that aren't comfortable who have the issues! What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?0 -
I would have thought that a girls car = car owned by girls & although I have met many women that like the MX-5, I've never met one who owns one.
But then I am a programmer and Logic is my 2nd name.
I'd rather think that the people who regard the MX-5 as a girls car and wouldn't own one for that reason are more insecure of their masculinity than those who drive them.
To all those who regard the MX-5 as a girls car.....would you drive one or own one no matter how much fun they were? If not why not?0 -

I do consider them girly, I have driven one and in all probability will again but I wouldn't own one.
I personally prefer bigger cars for "daily" use and if I wanted a fun totally impractical second car then I'd go for something more like the Atom. Plus, somewhat ironically, the wife doesn't like girly/ small/ cute cars other than to look at.0 -

Which is fine if you have £30k+ to spank on a toy but you can pick up an Mx5 from a grand up so not really comparing like for like there. What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?0 -
Much as I like the MX5, and it is a fantastic value, enjoyable second car, it does fall into the: What does going out with a fat lass have in common with riding a moped? They're both great fun until your mates see you.
I would have another in a heartbeat.0 -

Never claimed it was comparable, was just answer the question of why wouldn't I own an MX5 and that it would be because I'd go for an Atom if I ever live somewhere where we can park up a spare "fun" car safely/ securely.0
