Since when did great mean its not a girlie car. And since when did some list on the internet become fact?

Its a fun car, but underpowered, and a bit "cute". Its got a girlie reputation for a reason. A bunch of middle age blokes trying to prove they don't have a girlie car doesn't make it so.

If you like your car then who cares whether its got a girlie reputation?

Its the fact that it DOESNT have a girlie reputation but you think it does that we're trying to correct. Just because its your opinion doesnt make it right.
  • Car tax on the Mk2 and 2.5 registered after March 2001 is £280. An early MK3 is a good choice if you can stretch to that budget but they're not as much fun as the Mk2 or MK1. Brilliant cars and as people have said the engines are bullet proof. I've owned a MK1 and MK2 and would have another tomorrow apart from the practicality of it being a 2 seater.

What bemuses me is you made this sweeping statement that it was a girlie car and wasnt great to drive, yet theres overwhelming evidence to the contrary that it IS a great drive.

This probably points to your own driving limitations then rather than the rest of the worlds inability to spot that its not a great car to drive.

And if your opinion is wrong on that, its not hard to believe its wrong on being a 'girlie' car too.

I'll be honest, i dont know any women who own one, and any i've sold have been to blokes - one guy in his 20's and one guy in his thirties. The other two i know of that traders sold that i know were sold to blokes too.

Its actually quite funny that you're only retort is when faced with being wrong is 'oh oh its a bit girlie'.

i donmt think it's a girly car, but it's definitely a young persons car.

If you're middle aged you're going to look a bit silly in it, I say you should be 30 and under to drive it. If you're middle aged and driving a mx5 then it's a big statement that your career hasn't worked out for you.

Don't rise to it. I always found the most fun to be had was on a winding country road. They are remarkably trouble-free mechanically and parts are reasonably priced. There are many better cars but great fun can be had from about £2,000.

I can't believe how many people have posted here who don't own one!! I guess some have to get their oar into any discussion.

Main things to look for in the years you are looking at is corrosion around the window quarter, blocked drainage holes especially the 2 in front of the hood (easily cleared with a trombone cleaning brush) and flaky alloys (although Mazda did fix these if people claimed on warranty.

The MX5 was raised when imported to comply with EU regulations and this affected steering set up, you may need to have the alignment done if previous owner(s) didn't.

I am on my 3rd MX5 and a member of the owners club, feel free to message me if you require any info.

    Still a girly car?

    How about now?

That's a 2001 6 speed Mk2 with a slight power hike courtesy of a Rotrax Supercharger kit, running on semi-slicks.

I've also had the pleasure of driving a Supercharged one around Silverstone.

They're an absolute blast, and like many things those who trot out the old stereotypes are only showing up their own ignorance!

Great purity of handling, a very "raw" experience in M1's and Mk2's compared to most cars on the road today, and a fantastic introduction (and ongoing education) in balanced RWD handling.
