Colposcopy - I'm scared. (Not looking for med advice)

  • On ttc front, I'm with you there, but as HBS so wonderfully put it, this is a blip, not a roadblock on that front, so it's best to get things straight so ttc can go ahead without an additional worry.

Thanks, I think my ttc stalled in March! But yes, if and when
i get pregnant again, I want to make sure I am in the best place physically.

HBS, can I ask, did you have your treatment there and then? When
i had mine, I had it under GA, due to being rather nervous at my colposcopy appointment. If I need any further treatment this time, I want to be brave enough to let them get on with it if they offer. That said, I seem to have had an awful lot of poking around done up there recently, so I am hoping I will cope a lot better.

I have had lots of time off recently, with other medical appointments and taking the dog to the vets numerous times, and my manager has been amazing, but I really don't want to push my luck and I know there is no one next week who could cover my session for me.
  • Heyhey :)

Yep, I had LLETZ on the spot, I was more frightened of the local anaesthetic jabs than the tissue removal! However, I had been warned I would probably be treated there and then if I wanted, so I phoned my GP in advance and asked if they could give me something to calm me down and they did.

The first jab feels like a sharp period pain, and then everything is numb. There's adrenalin in the local to make sure it's working, so you'll get a bit fluttery - but you are well warned of this. Everything after that feels like either pressure or tugging - no pain!

The LLETZ machine makes a bit of an odd noise, and there's a slight burning smell, but it doesn't hurt. They took 2 large biopsies from me and I didn't feel a thing. I took deep yoga-style breaths during the treatment and thought of nice things, and tried to stay relaxed as the more relaxed you can stay, the less the doc has to pull around at you.

It's really not as bad as you would think, and I kept telling myself to relax and that it needed to be done - the mind is a powerful tool with things like this. I cried a little when they removed the speculum at the end of the procedure, but the nurse explained that most people do - it's a combination of relief that it's over and the adrenalin wearing off!

It's a week later now (I actually was in with the doc this time last week!) and I'm still bleeding a little bit and have some cramps but I managed a walk with the dog the past few nights and some yoga last night.

I would advise booking the next day off work if you can (I had 2 days because I was incredibly bloated and tender as well as being tired) but I'm nearly back to my normal self now. Stick on heat pads are superb, and paracetamol gets rid of any pain.

Good luck - I am sure if I can do it you can, I'm a big wuss really!

  • Just a quick update - I'm at the docs today because I think I might have an infection :( apparently it's not unusual and requires some antibiotics. Really annoying though!

  • Oh no HBS, how horrible for you :( if I remember correctly I ended up with an infection last time. After everything we go through it's the last thing you want isn't it!

No news on my front, it's been over a week now and every passing day I feel more hopeful about the outcome. I'll keep you posted on the results when I get them.
Some times you have to hold back to go forward to where you want to be.

  • Looks like we're all in a similar boat. I had mine done Monday. They siad they found something abnormal so they did a biopsy. Now the 4-6 week to find out the results :-(
  • Hugs to both of you!

ILLT, hopefully a course of antibiotics will sort me right out. I miss powerlifting and running, only 3 weeks to go :(

I had a cone biospy and lets treatment back in 2000 as i had abnormal smear, my gp at the time said it was a grade 1 to 5 (5 being the back end) i was a 4...

At the hospital I had the treatment done, from memory it was like period pain and I could smell some burning the device reminded me of curling tongs, I remember the doctor was not the most helpful, the nurse apologised as i needed some support, i went by myself, I wish i had of taken a friend with me.. for moral support.

I had about 30mins of treatment, they took literally the layer of my cervix was burnt away.

I had some light bleeding and that day and the next day, stomach cramps like bad period pains.

Work wise I took 2 days off (day of the treatment and day after), I had bad bleeding, (not the norm, but it can happen to a smell % of people), I went back to work and did light duties for 2 weeks.

my results came back as pre-cancerous cells, but they were pretty sure they were all burnt away, I had the follow up at the hospital.

My 1st smear after that was done at the hospital, same as being done by the nurse at my GP surgery, that came back clear.

I was advised to have 3 smears at 6 monthly intervals as then (again this was back in 2001), with the 1st at the hospital and the 2nd and 3rd at Gp.

I had the 1st smear in the Dec 2000, the 2nd July 2001 (which was at GP surgery) the 3rd I didnt book in as there was major kick off ats work, when I went to book my 3rd - small problem - I was pregnant!!

I think I had the next smear when DD was 6 months old, that came back clear, I was initially told that I would be on yearly recalls for 5 yrs, each one of those came back clear, but I have been called back yearly, (although I have missed last 2 yrs - medical complications down there), but intend to get it sorted.

The thing I would say to anyone going for a biospy, have some comfy clothes ready, as your feel like curling up with a hot water bottle, work wise, if your in a manual job, on your feet, then have a quiet word with your employer as to lighten your duties.

If you do have any side effects - your be given a leaflet please read this through, I not here to panic anyone.

I did get told no jiggy jiggy for 2 weeks!!

    Please all take care xxx
xx rip dad... we had our ups and downs but we’re always be family xx

Please remember ladies that CIN whatever stage is NOT cervical cancer. Just abnormal cells that they would rather remove in case they did develop into cancer.

We are lucky that we have such a great preventative/screening service in the UK - so please always encourage your friends/family to have regular smear tests.

OP, even though none of this is anything new to you, its hard not to get emotional sometimes when you think of the possibilities of what could occur if you hadn't had your smear/coloposcopy/treatments.

  • Phahahaha!:rotfl:Oh HBS! That made me lol...

I'm feeling a bit edgy today, I'm feeling strong and I want to know my results, I've concemplated calling the department to see if they've had any details back yet, but every time I pick up the phone I get nervous again and put it back down.

Thanks also to Make-it-3, reading what you've said in black and white made me feel better about things!
