Are XLN any good

Does any else use this phone company,I changed over to them it is 15.99 a month with 600 mins of free local phone calls.
After recieving my first bill I had been charged for eleven Non Geographic numbers! (and interent service, which I do not use with them). which we hadn't made, there is only my self and my husband so we know we haven't made these calls.I have rung them three times and each time some one was supposed to call me back within 2hrs and they didn't.
I would now like to go back to my old phone company,I agreed to this service over the phone and did not sign a contract can they hold me to the tweleve months we are supposed to be with them.

I'd never heard of them before so looked at their website.

It appears you have signed up with them for their Free 600 package (line rental and 600 'free' minutes of local and national calls) for the £15.99 (which is really £18.79 with VAT).

Their comparisons with BT's line rental and call charges are, to say the least, interesting!

They use charges which, for the vast majority of BT customers, have not applied since 1/7/2004 (since when, BT have charged 3p/minute incl. VAT on a weekday for a call to any UK 01 or 02 number - and do not differentiate between local and national calls - so the 3.36p/6.73p excl. VAT rates no longer apply for two reasons). Additionally, BT only charge 5.5p for such a call (up to an hour) in the evening or at weekends. I can't see any such reduction in XLN's rates.

I don't recognise the £13.72 (£16.12 with VAT) as being an amount BT charge for line rental either (I pay £10.50 incl. VAT per month).

So, to say you get 600 'free' minutes of calls for your £18.79 is a slight overstatement because, taking into account £18.79 is £8.39 more than BT's line rental, you're actually paying about 1.4p a minute for those 'free' calls if you use all the minutes.

Having now handed over your line rental to XLN, what arrangements are there for repairs? With BT, that's part of the cost but with third party suppliers, that is not necessarily so.

And now you've got problems with allegedly false calls on your bills as well.

Can you get out of the contract and go back to BT without penalty? If you can, "do so" would be my advice.

Then pay BT for BT Together Option 1 (line rental only) and sign up for OneTel's StandardUKTalk CPS (CarrierPreSelect) but NOT line rental - and get really free 01/02 calls at the weekend.

Then sign up for 18866 and get 01/02 calls at other times for 2p each (not per minute).
Their - possessive pronoun (owned by them e.g. "They locked their car").
    They're - colloquial/abbreviated version of 'They are'
There - noun (location other than here e.g. "You can buy groceries there") OR adverb (in or at that place e.g. "They have lived there for years") OR adverb (to or towards that place e.g. "Go there at noon") OR adverb (in that matter e.g. " I agree with you there").

The BT basic monthly line rental is £10.50 inclusive of VAT provided you pay by direct debit.
  • Hi

My mum is thinking of joining XLN Telecom for her business phone. She runs a small business.

I have read on here lots of nasty things about them - mainly from the first half of 2006. Things like them signing people up who had only requested information and also them being investigated by OFCOM for having lots of complaints.

What's anyone's more recent experience? Have they improved since those stories last year or would you still not recommend using them?

    Many thanks
    James

Would she not be better off using www.18185.co.uk if she has a BT Line.
  • I would say go for it. I signed up with XLN at my house and got the FULL package (phone & Broadband) - I opted to use my own router/modem coz they only offer a normal modem at £40 so if you need wireless its prob cheaper getting your own. Anyway - im getting great service on both the Phone and Internet with great speeds & Prices!!!

Compared to my expierence with BT - Long call waiting times to get through to someone:mad: , and when you do get through its usually to foreign call centers:mad: , who (in my opinion) are not given enough training  - Also you have to wait on long re-connection waiting times:mad: ... I would prefer to pay a bit more to get the service that I expect from ANY company!

Oh one last thing - XLN set up a 3way call to BT to help me choose a number that was a bit more catchy than a bog standard number, which was as promised, on time and I got a number that is FAB:T .

So, all in all - I have no probmes with XLN and intend to recommend them to friends and family!:j

If you have any questions let me know - just new to this site!:D

    Shab.

    Keep away from them
  • Anyone switched to xln from bt - both line rental and calls?

Many promises just wondered if they are as good as they say.
  • I have signed from BT - coz when I can a problem can you get anyone to answer? and when you do get an answer you get the wrong info. To date I have over 8 hours of hold time just to find out why they keep missing appointmnets in my inlaw's house for a new line connection.

I am so glad I went to XLN - nothing but fast, cheap, brill service! Forget the bad press - every company has its moments - but for me - XLN have been nothing but GREAT! (the only delay was when they needed BT to switch the exhange over - which BT Delayed) but XLN offered £20 good will without me asking so it is brill.... I did the shopping around and I cant get cheaper!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    internet is super fast too!

    Shab.
  • Hi folks,
We have been approached by XLN regarding switching from BT to their special offer package of £25 per month for free unlimited UK calls and free unlimited Broadband -aimed at small businesses (which we are) .
Being an avid "money saver", I have trawled the forums to find a previous thread (now locked) from unhappy XLN employees - this was in 2005/2006 and made mention of some OFFCOM investigations. I have read the OFFCOM complaints - some of which were upheld at the time, with recommendations for changes. However, as it is now 2008, I wondered if things had changed, improved, or stayed the same in terms of their service to customers .......does anyone use them and how have you found them?

Many thanks, in advance, for your time and views
    Kind Regards
    Ros :D

  • Welcome.

How can the calls and broadband be Free if you are paying £25 a month for them.

If you have not agreed with BT a minimum spend in your contract, you might consider using www.18185.co.uk which offers geographical calls just 5p a call, cheaper mobile, ngn, and intl calls.
