I am thankful for all the opportunities I have benefited from by being raised in the UK. I am proud of myself for making the most of them as they became available to me and for what I have achieved in life. I am not proud to be British, that is just my nationality and something I instantly gained by being born here, it doesn't define who I am.

When I lived in Spain, there were some Brits there who could not wait for their ten years of Spanish residency to come around so that they could take Spanish citizenship. Whilst there is nothing wrong with this, it was not something I could ever contemplate. I am English and will stay that way until I die. It does partly define who I am. I know it is an accident of birth but so are other things and they all help make me who I am and I see nothing wrong in being proud of my country and caring whether it goes to the dogs or not.

Um, you do realise that gay pride celebrations are not about just the mere fact of being gay, but about overcoming prejudice and discrimination, surely you must?

Someone who himself proud to be a white British male is probably not someone I'd want to be alone with.

Not worthy of you, Person One.

Why would they? Not even all Scots get a vote.

because any chance to see less of Alec Salmond is something I'd vote for!

While I would be gutted if Scotland were to leave, its not really on for all of us to get a say in their lives.

That'd be like every Russian getting a vote on Chechnya's independence.

I think it should be two-fold.

Scotland votes on indepence. If they want it, they get it.

The rest of the UK votes on Scotland leaving. If there is a majority in favour, bye bye Scotland.

So if both Scotland on the one hand, and the rest of the UK on the other, wants Scotland to stay in the UK, they stay.

IMHO it's about celebrating being gay. The Gay Pride marches look like joyful affairs to me. You called them celebrations yourself. So I will wave MY flag if I wish and be proud of it.

I'm, saying no more about this ,I am getting more and more angry about being attacked by Person One for being who I am, as though being a Christian and sticking up for my country is something bad. There are only certain people in her book who have rights, it appears.

It's not. But please do continue to tell us what the intentions are behind our own actions.

The only men I've ever seen shouting about how proud they are of being white and British are usually kettled and carrying a racist banner.

How can you be proud of being accidentally born a certain race/sex/nationality?

If anything, people who have had to work to become British, taken citizenship tests etc. have got far more reason to be proud of their status.

There's a difference between being proud of your country and being proud of being a certain nationality. The former is fine (as long as the country deserves it) but the latter, to me anyway, has negative connotations. Especially because you don't have to do anything for the latter.

I'm sorry you feel that way, what rights do you feel are denied you as a white British Christian?

To be fair to SDW, when I was involved with SM Gay Pride back in the Nineties, it WAS partly about celebrating who we are and partly about fighting for our consensual rights (in light of the Spanner case etc). I definitely don't see SDW and TQ as bigots; they have views which differ from mine, as is within their rights. I also don't see them as nationalistic extremists. They seem like normal people to me (apart from the fact that we all post on here, which means we're all screwed ;))

  • Thanks so much Tiglath, that has cheered me up. I am just stating what I see, like others do. It just gets to me sometimes when I am accused of all sorts of heinous crimes and prejudices and certain people don't think I have a right to a valid opinion because I am English, straight, white and Christian. I'm a nice person really :)
