Can anyone help me to adapt conventional recipes for the pressure cooker? Should I base the timings on the ingredient that takes the longest time to cook?
I have some favourite recipes that I would like to try out.

Hi everyone
I have just come across this thread and it's so useful! I have been using a pressure cooker off and on for over 20 years (DH had one from his mother when I first met him). I've just bought a new stainless steel one and it's so much better than the old one (mind you, it was probably getting on for 40 years old with all original gaskets etc.), and it doesn't hiss so violently.The only thing I used to do in the old one regularly was my Christmas pudding - 2 hour initially and then 30 min on Christmas day - so much better than my Mum steaming up the kitchen for a day doing hers. I have a slow cooker as well, but can't remember the last time I used it as I am not organised enough to start it off in the morning for dinner at night.
Shall look forward to trying the recipes from the links now.

I have just been lucky enough to get a brand new Tefal presure cooker in ( battered ) box for £5 in my local charity shop, someone was just bringing it in and I asked quickly how much they wanted for it. I used to have one when I was first married, over 30 years ago, and can't wait to try it out again, they don't seem to have changed much! I'll definitely be trying out some of the recipes on here, thanks all!0

I use my PC for steaming potatoes. Put the trivet in the bottom of the cooker, fill with water so it just comes up to the trivet (or whatever the minimum water amount is for your cooker) and put similar size potatoes in on top of the trivet. Bring to 15lbs (full) pressure and cook for 12 - 15 mins for medium Desiree-type spuds. Reduce pressure by steam release or cold water over the rim.
They taste soooo much better steamed, the skins come off so easily and although I don't like mash, steamed spuds make much better mash.
By cooking potatoes like this they suddenly become a bit more accessible - whilst they are in the pressure cooker I can fry off some spices for making bombay potato, they can be done quickly in the morning for a potato and egg breakfast scramble, the possibilities are endless!0 -
I have had both pressure cookers and slow cookers for the past 30 something years but last year bought a new SC as mine small and only one setting. I absolutely HATE it - when it's on it smells slightly chemical for some reason (I thought it would wear off), everything falls apart in it and tastes exactly like everything else. But then I bought a new PC (they had always frightened me in the past) and it is WONDERFUL. I am doing a lamb shank and white bean casseroley thing as I type, and I do stock, soups, other sorts of stews, and all because it doesn't hiss and frighten me. I do feel a bit inadequate when I see the large numbers of people on here who really love and use their slow cookers - I think mine is really horrible and I never cook anything tasty in it (I'm a good cook normally). So I'm very glad to discover that there are others out there like me who prefer their PC to their SC ! :beer:0

morganlefay - I totally agree! And I can't stand it when some poor new person comes along and says I can't do OS because I don't have a slow cooker!:mad:
I do see that some cuts of meat benefit from slow cooking in a slow cooker but I do look at some of the things people cook in them and wonder how it comes out as anything other than bland, tasteless mush. And as a vegetarian, slow cookers are as good as useless - destroying vitamin content and transforming veg to mush.
The only thing I would like is a normal lid for my PC, so I can use it as a totally normal large saucepan as well.0 -
I have often used my PC as a normal saucepan - taking off the rubber gasket and leaving the weight off the top (mind you, it is a lovely old prestige not one with a fancy gizmo on the top)0
