What kind of "explanation" could there be? If someone wants to leave, or isn't feeling in love any more, that's explanation enough. There's no requirement to submit a watertight case for breakup to the relationship parole board.

There's a small chance it's just maybe-the-grass-is-greener dithering, but in that case the person will change his (her?) mind quick sharp if you treat it like the break-up it's 99% likely to be: stop calling, block on social media, and purchase sufficient ice cream, tissues and DVD box sets for any necessary wallowing.

It can also mean that he loves you but he's no longer in love with you.

Sometimes people just fall out of love, without sleeping with someone else.

Agree with everyone. He wants out.
But he still has affection for you, like for a sister. He's fond of you from your history together but doesn't want to stay with you and is trying not to hurt you.

I thought she meant "I hate you, because I've spent 20 years attempting to change your personality, but I've realised you'll never be the person I want to be, and I'd rather you were the person you used to be, than the person I've turned you into"

All better now though. I think the last time she said anything relating to our relationship, she said "I'd die if anything happened to you, I love you so much"
