Our local NHS dentist practice - Eclipse Dental Studio, Lee on the Solent, Hants - insists on using an 0844 number as a "service" to it's customers! Even after many complaints it is still refusing to offer a landline!0

You're looking only at BT prices. You also need to consider other landline providers and the various mobile networks....
Yes, I did say they were the costs from BT landlines didn't I?
For anyone that isn't already aware, callls from other networks may vary, and from mobiles will cost considerably more.
Something to bear in mind before deciding to ditch and switch away from BT0 -
Giff gaff mobile offers free calls to all 0800 numbers.

Free phone numbers (starting 0800, 0808 & 0500)
Don't do 0844 you have to pay 12p a min
i have a gg number had it for over a year.
