How do I tax my car?
Options
Hey,
I recently bought a car and Ive no idea how I go about taxing it. The logbook has been sent to the DVLA to update the drivers details and Ive been told(and also read online) that its required to tax my car and can take several weeks to be returned.
First time driver here, any help is appreciated!
The documents I have :
Both parts of a full UK driving liscence,
receipt of sale for the vehicle,
v5c/2, v5c/4 slips,
valid MOT certificate,
Coverletter confirming car is insured (PDF version of certificate: printable)
Documents Im missing :
Insurance certificate paper copy (being sent out by my insurer)
Logbook
Thanks,
Sam

You only need to take the insurance certificate and MOT to the Post Office. Log book not needed0

You can tax the car using the New Keeper's slip (V5C2), as long as you take a current MoT certificate (if needed) and evidence of insurance.0

Thanks for the rapid replies! I shall go down after work tomorrow.0

If your insurance cover letter has your policy number you just need that, your V5 and MOT certificate.0

Do it online? You have the information.0

I just did it online and the disc arrived the next day! I was very impressed.Hi. I'm a Board Guide on the Gaming, Consumer Rights, Ebay and Praise/Vent boards. They do accept insurance cover letters with the policy number included.0 -
If you have just purchased the car, do not do the tax online. If you do, then the tax disc will go to the previous owners address as it takes 2-3 weeks for DVLA to process the V5 you sent in.Never Knowingly Understood.

You can't tax a new car online or over the phone. It has to be done at the PO. Likewise a covering letter with pol number on is NOT suffice. It has to be the certificate of insurance.
In future though OP you should get reminders through in the post and you'll be able to tax online or over the phone using the reference provided. You then need no docs as it's all done electronically!0
