So ebay tell you these things do they- and not the big mega sellers who are still trying to make sense of the already announced September changes. Yet you don't even believe we have visible star ratings as per your comment on another thread?

Or do you mean that you have seen the announcement about fees being paid on postage that we have been discussing for weeks now?

The difference is I am talking to their legal department not customer service.
  • As I've stated on other threads sellers that sell lots of small items in groups where buyers pick and choose different (non-multi variation) items, can't use free postage. Their customers will all be worse off after the changes.

Sellers who are saying they might be better off and already offer free postage are in a slightly different market.

From my perspective, everything on eBay is about to go up by about 5%.

God, it sickens me to see the number of fools rushing to defend ebay - this same company that is paying virtually no tax in this country and doing every legal dodge to avoid it. Whilst they then gouge 10% on your postage cost, plus Paypal (which was 3.4% plus 20p for non powersellers when I last turned over decent money) so they're already creaming about 15% of the postage cost, whilst shouting from the roofs, don't let that selling charge you a penny over marked postage, because we want our commission on it.

And we have people defending this company that refuses to pay tax in this country. Common sense died long ago.

On paypal, as far as I know, you choose between micropayments (5p per item plus higher percentage) or usual 20p per item plus a lower percentage. Then they have their own volume discounts which aren't massive. I don't think the power seller program affects this.

The system has changed since I was big into ebay/paypal, but the powerseller programme certainly got you lower paypal costs. I think (my memory is fading) that I was paying a little over 2% (at gold level). I think silver was about 2.8% to 3%. Gold was £6K per month sales.

Which other medium gives you access to such a large customer base for such a small fee? Try advertising in your local paper or online the costs will start to pile up. Ebay is here to make money not to fill your pockets if you have such a problem you could always walk away but I doubt you will. You should view ebay as a strategic partner keep ahead of the game adopt the changes and you will survive otherwise there is no future on ebay.

I'm a business man, I understand and accept all (most, not the tax avoidance) of that.

But, I still don't understand why people want to champion a company that according to the Telegraph, avoids £50 million a year tax. They make out that people avoiding a few fees (and keeping the price lower for the buyer) is wicked and crooked whilst trying to avoid taxes.

The company is trying to make money and not pay taxes, I'm trying to make money and keep my costs down. All I'm saying is that ebay shouldn't be given a pat on the back, they're not trying to keep postage costs down for the buyer, they're trying to get more profit and therefore more cost for the buyer. If a seller can sell you a product for £20 + £5 postage, as opposed to £27 with 'free' delivery, and you buy from the former, you shouldn't be giving the seller a kick in the nuts and if you're such a fan of free postage, then don't buy from me at £20 + £5 delivery, go buy the from the 'free' postage seller.
  • I've just had a seller in China tell me they can't discount postage on 900 items because it's "free postage".

Needless to say I replied, "never mind then"

I expect you'll see a lot of this when sellers are forced down the free postage route.

    Hi Soolin,

I know we've banged heads over the years, but please accept my words as the truth.

Maybe bronze got you nothing, it was 5 years ago. Silver certainly got you a reduction and gold even more. Plus platinum and diamond got you extra. I don't have time right no, but it was clearly marked out on the paypal site.
