I'm not sure why people are saying op shouldn't be posting because she paid £75 for a candle and it's mse, so everyone is poor, what rubbish.
I would also suspect like Valli has said, it is probable the glass had a defect. Either from manufacturing or damage. As I do believe what you said happened and I can see how.
Personally I think the company are being obtuse if the expert is based in France, I also don't understand why they can't send it back in a box. I would expect better service from a top end brand.
That said, you did over dramatise it all, really lost your cool and made a hash of the complaint. You'd have got further by being polite and straight to the point.
That said neither comes out smelling of roses IMO....0 -
You simply went about this entirely the wrong way.
You come across as hypocritical and aggressive, shooting about how your house could have burnt down and your children maimed, and then being shirty about his employee 'almost' cutting himself being like 'almost' winning the lottery.
If you had been half as confrontational you'd probably have a nice new candle to go with your hundred others.0 -

If you rub it against fabric, you get charges of static electricity building up.0 -
I like the fact you mention all the things that could have happened eg house burnt down, child could have been maimed etc but when they say that they were almost cut you responded with
"By the way G++ almost cutting yourself is the same as almost winning the lottery.Point understood"
On the plus side once you've got the candle back you can test it yourself and take this case further. Hopefully you'll win.0 -
I know I said I was out of this thread, but I just want to put something straight.
When I said that laminate tables tend to be less expensive (than solid wood for example) it was not intended as an insult in any way. I have a mix of furniture in my house, some is made from wooden crates - I am not the sort of person who thinks less expensive is anything to be ashamed of.
What I was trying to point out was that was one of the things you made a point of in your first email, Lucie - which suggested you were preparing to make a claim for burn damages.
My comment was intended to give you a heads up that at least in my view, it might undermine your credibility to make a fuss about how expensive a laminate table might be. Just to say that it had damaged your table would be enough, perhaps.
Other comments I have made could seem a bit abrupt when I look back at them, and I am sorry if I made you feel uncomfortable in any way.
I was attempting to point out that should you take it to legal action, it doesn't look to me like a winner because of the inconsistencies mentioned (and especially if they can show that the candle wasn't lit - I'm not calling you a liar, at all) IF they CAN show that, then there would be no claim for burn damages.
When you think about accident investigations, particularly involving fire, details such as whether a candle was lit or not can be found out even after a devastating fire. That is what I meant when I said that it should be quite easy, should it come to that, for their legal team to show that it wasn't lit at the time of breakage.
If their solicitor is prepared to make that statement in the first letter to you, it strongly suggests that they do have some evidence that the candle wasn't lit when the glass broke and think they can base their case on it. I'm not commenting on your integrity by making this observation, just the facts as they are presented.
Since those posts, you have said that you don't want to claim for damages but want to investigate the quality of the product range to see if the company might be negligent in some way. That's a whole new ball game and a step up from refund/cover of damages so you can expect the company to defend itself vigorously.
Another thing I noticed was that it looks as though some of the correspondence is missing - again this observation is not intended to upset you, but if you are looking for advice it might be worth including all of it (IF some is missing).
Please don't take objective views that differ from your own to be a personal attack or to mean that someone has the company's interests at heart rather than your own.I believe in the freedom of spinach and the right to arm bears.

A terribly written complaint - when it comes to consumer issues, concise and to the point is always the way to go. I struggled to read through it, and I applaud the team at Jo Malone if they managed to do so.

BoP will now interrupt for the hard of reading.
OP, a newbie so be nice to them, got given a present by her ex! BF, a candle costing loads of money. Somehow it was encased in glass, and it blew up, allegedly < knocked over on carpet >, causing nearly a national emergency.
OP and BF, who proffer they be skint, the purchased said candle instead of home contents insurance and have threatened legal action.

How does a candle make your ironing smell nice? Do you iron the wax?! Sorry, but am I missing something here?0 -
