Thanks for the insider info...By scanner, I meant - does the collecting postie have a hand-held device with which they scan a barcode on the inside of the door? If so, does that device timestamp the collection or does the postie type in the time they reached the box. The latter could be open to manipulation or error.

I'm guessing there isn't actually one collector per box all arriving at 1730 but each has a round and does the first at 1730, the next at 1732 etc. So it's possible (but not reliable) to drop something in just after the last time and it will still be picked up.

    Yup,thats right.
The same PDAs you sign for packages on cover collection duties too.
When a postie is on a collection they scan the 'route header'.
This will then list all the collection points, with times and they run order.
When they clear any box they scan the box barcode inside the box.
This notes the time and GPs for that scan and removes the box from the run list.
Collections are closely monitored and any failed/early/missed scans are checked daily and must be explained.
A missed collection means a USO failure. Not a small matter.

boxes can always be cleared late, but never early.

I thought we were supposed to rest for six months between sessions, but I am back on again after, maybe 2-3 months rest. I suspect they are short of people in my area as that is often the case here.

No, they don't all have a smart - only if the posting plan says so.
Does the post box have the number on it? Or is it on a corner? I have one that's sitting on one road but TNS have it registered to the adjoining street. If in doubt email them with all the information that you have to help them identify it.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

They emailed me to ask if I could just keep on going when my six month's stint ended as they were short of people in my area. I was happy to oblige. They even said that I didn't need to do the training again!

Oh, I bet I'll have to retrain! Would be great if not. Actually, it is not clear from the email; it just says they will send my first sender's back week commencing...

Not if you (as the receiver) want to stay on the panel - see post 4996
You will have been deemed to be compromised and removed from the panel immediately.

To me it sounded as though the "cube" had not been assembled by the sender but folded flat with probably just the piece of paper and smart inside.
In that case it doesn't "out" the recipient but does show the sender doesn't deserve the £2 L2S voucher for posting over the PO counter.

Hi all, my first post/comment so please forgive me if this type of question has been answered earlier in the thread!!
Johnmoney05(post #4929)..........You said you had a cube to post in the training period and that you received a voucher a little later on. Can I ask if the cube came to you in your grey posting pack already stamped or did you have to buy an APL? So are TNS reimbursing you for spending your own money on an APL, or if it was stamped, are they giving it to you as a thank you, as it were?!!
I had a cube to post in my training period, which already had its stamps on, and I wondered if I'll be receiving a voucher soon too?!!
I was under the impression that you got a voucher as reimbursement for spending your own money on APL postage! I know it's only a couple of quid we're taking about but like you said, it pays the petrol!
    Thank you x

They do both (stamps and APLs) but whether you get one or both in your training period is up to them. If you have to go to the post office to post anything over the counter that isn't meant to fit in a post box (cube/med parcel) you get £2 L2S the end of the month after posting (whether in training or on the real panel) for going to the post office for those items.
If its an APL required you get sent L2S vouchers with the grey posting pack, that contains the item, rounded up to the next £ for reimbursement. If the item is already stamped then no reimbursement for the cost of posting just the bonus afterwards once its been confirmed as completed
