Personally, I think buyers don't realise how damaging a low 1-2 star rating can be to a business seller, and I think that because they're anonymous, it's a way for buyers to leave negative feedback in a non-confrontational way, and that's not helpful to anyone.
You can't please all the people all the time, but if you're a good seller with detailed listings, you'll do well - I have 4.9/5 and I'm a high-volume seller... although I do include a note ;-)0 -
Personally I wouldn't bother with the free gift, it's just going to eat into your profits and reap no benefit at all. It's not going to make them buy more from you, or even give you higher stars in this case. Just make sure everything is described well and dispatch as quickly as possible.
I have a 3 day dispatch time on my stuff purely because I can't always get the stuff dispatched within a shorter period (I'm only a small business). But I try and get everything out the next day after payment if not that day. That's what really maters.
The only time I've included a free 'gift' (I wouldn't call it a gift as such) is when I've sold a large quantity of items to someone, I include something extra. But my items are highly specialist and it's always something like what they have ordered. So say they've ordered 5 of something, I'll include 7. Doesn't make any difference to the stars, but in my case as it's so specialist I've found it has helped with return customers.
Got to admit I am guilty of including slips in my post for the buyer but doesn't include anything about stars. Just the normal if there's a problem or you have an enquiry please contact me on 'blah' or 'blah' but it's more for people to contact me if they want anything special putting on ebay.Remember never judge someone that makes a mistake, because in six months time it may be you that makes the next mistake.0 -
Don't forget that a seller can get an automatic 5* for communication by NOT communicating as long as their sale is set up to a 1 day despatch. If they have a 1 day despatch and send a nice little email telling buyer item is on its way, then they can be marked down if buyer chooses.
communication should be greyed when there has been "no" communication either way, I find it bizzare rating something thats not applicable.
the automatic 5 star is also stupid as a 1 day dispatch has nothing to do with comunication.0 -
Free gifts - a nice idea but not really necessary. Sometimes when I buy things the seller includes some sweets, lovely idea but hmm, stranger danger! I'm not eating that!
I think if you're selling a great product it's just not needed, and I probably would think I'd been over charged in the first place if they can afford to do that! Free postage and quick dispatch are much more important to me!!0 -
I can't realistically offer free postage everything I sell will be auction based and postage will be around 10 pounds, due to the size and going over seas.
As I understand it to maintain power seller status you have to stays above 4.6, what is the number to be a standard seller? I'm just wondering how low it goes before your below standard?Chances are I'm in this thread asking questions as I love to learn new stuff. (Did you know all polar bears are left handed?)0 -

Tell me, how do you get free postage?
Postage included in the selling price is not free, it is identical, it just means that the postage is added on to the selling price.
Stop believing ebay propaganda, there is no such thing as free postage, every time I go to the post office and ask if I can send a parcel for free, they say no.
Why don't buyers just add the selling price and postage quoted, together and decide whether they are happy with the overall cost or not.0 -

to add to the link already posted in response to your post- only the first domestic postage needs to be free to attain TRS discounts.
So my listings (where it is possible) show free UK 2nd class postage but with an uplift for 1st, special delivery and airmail. All postage is shown as required including the airmail postage so when someone buys my item they are automatically charged the correct postage for their country with the addition of options for UK buyers.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. I'm only a small occasional private seller. For a while I've been under the impression (mostly from this forum) that you need a minimum DSR score of 4.6 in all categories, otherwise risking suspension, leading up to a permanent ban.
THEN I read SteveE2's link! I've tried reading the help pages before, but never saw that particular page.
From that page it looks like although 4.6 is the minimum requirement to retain Powerseller /TRS status, the only DSR requirement to avoid suspension is to get no more than 3 1s/2s (I'm ignoring the % alternative).
Also, the max allowed low DSR scores per category is 3. According to this page, having 3 lows will lose you TRS status, but not get you suspended.
Is this all correct, or am I missing something? :think:0
