I I have often left three stars for things like communication if I haven't had cause to contact the seller and they haven't contacted me at all themselves not even to say item on the way etc.

If they haven't sent a dispatch notification, then I think lower stars for communication is justified. Hopefully that's what you mean rather than marking someone down as they haven't sent a personal message to say the item is on it's way, which is completely unnecessary provided the dispatch notifications are used.

That's totally it, the little note saying 'please leave 5 stars on the DSR, if you feel you can't please let me know so I can fix any problems you might have' to educate the buyer on how important feedback is,

Several people have already said on the thread they find these irritating and it would make no difference to how they score you.

The most difficult aspect of DSR to get right is postage, so are you inviting people to contact you asking for a postage refund if they feel they've paid too much?

All a person needs to do is to to get 5 stars from me for communication is to mark the item as dispatched when they have posted it.

I actually find it a bit excessive to get a personal message when I've paid and then another personal message after it's sent. Just a bit OTT for me.

Completely agree, once had a seller who sent me an invoice, a message, a message when payment was received, a dispatch note and a message to say they'd posted it.

I didn't leave feedback, as in sorely tempted to mark down on communication for too much information.

That is what I meant, I've had that happen a few times.

No dispatch notification is poor service. Low stars justified, no matter what begging slip of paper comes with your purchase.

    Thank you.

Do a lot of people realistically leave low dsrs and does a note in the package mentioning the importance of stars help, maybe adding a free gift too?

I used to leave what some on here consider low scores (3-4 stars), because I didnt understand the implications of leaving those ratings and I considered 3 stars to mean average not poor. I find it hard to believe I am the only person using ebay who didnt understand ebay's true intentions of the star system. But others on here claim anything other than 5 stars is rare.

When the 5 star system first came out I also remember there used to be a message stating the ratings would have no affect on the account's standing but would provide the seller a means to measure their own performance, that message is now gone but that contributed to the misunderstanding.

Don't forget that a seller can get an automatic 5* for communication by NOT communicating as long as their sale is set up to a 1 day despatch. If they have a 1 day despatch and send a nice little email telling buyer item is on its way, then they can be marked down if buyer chooses.

I should elaborate, the magnet would not be a tacky bit of card or plastic, but a 3d hand painted piece of art, so if you buy say a stars trek poster, you might get a sculpted uss enterprise to pop on your fridge, not a bit of tat but a quality item as a way of saying thanks.

Sorry it is tat. Some people might like a fridge magnet others (like me) wouldn't.

These "free gifts" will have cost you money. Better to spend it discounting the postage which would, hopefully, help your ratings.

How can customers know this when eBay have done nothing to educate customers.

ebay doesn't want to educate customers. Most people think giving a 4 is a good/very good and 5 is only for exemplary service. However you need (or did when I was a gold powerseller) 4.6 average or above. ebay want to withhold powerseller discounts and take their fee from the postage costs through Paypal and from next month ebay FVF.
