At the risk of sounding horribly technical with the possibility of too much information(!) if she really wants to go swimming/scuba diving, the water pressure while she's in the water will stop any leakage.

So if she's not comfortable with the idea of using tampons ( and they can take a bit of getting used to) she could go for a swim and not use anything while in the water, then wrap a towel round just in case and scoot straight off to change and use a pad, especially if she's only got a light flow.
The only thing about that is the embarrassment factor when it's all new to her - she's likely to be far more self-conscious and convinced that everyone's noticed, even though it's all very discreet nowadays.
So it's up to her, but at least she has some choices if she is on for a bit longer.
I second this as well. As a non tampon user, if the flow is light or nearing the end (and your daughter will have an idea of this) she can do as suggested,
I have and just grabbed a beach towel at the side of the pool or got other half to stand by with one when im getting out of the sea. Straight to changing room with a pad and clean swim stuff and shorts and no one noticed at all.
  • I think my sister needs to help or her mum tomorrow morning, this is getting a bit over my head.

We have read websites and she knows it will happen again and stuff it is just some sites say that the first time it can go within a day or two then come back in a few days.

She is trying to work out her holiday.

We are in a mates villa so luckily it is only us, perhaps this will help her.

I repeat she's dealing with this well its me that is feeling lost with all her questions. Maybe I should ring mum from her mobile, she has said she doesn't want to ring her. My Ex and I have a good relationship and care a great deal for each other and co parent well but she has a new relationship which is the first serious one for either of us and he does not like how close we are. I suspect that is why she is not answering. If I ring from my daughters phone she may reply.
  • im a bloke and will say well done your handling it well.

in hindsight tampons for a 13 yr old innocent i wouldnt prefure, my ex girlfriend told me she never got to experience a full first time intercourse because the hymen was broken due to use of "lite"tampons as she was a small girl anyways so missed out on the full experience, and got bullied at college when she described her first time with who she thought friends being painfull but didnt experince bleeding.

for me i would like my daughters to use pads rather than tampon types.

Um, ok, hymens break for all kinds of reasons other than losing virginity. Believe me, her first sexual experience will be no more or less special with an intact hymen.

Having been a teenage girl, I can't imagine other teenage girls laughing at somebody because she didn't bleed the first time she had sex. How weird.

    Sorry Iwilllearntosave!
Grateful to finally be debt free!

Add to that, hymens stretch, so using tampons won't necessarily break it anyway.
  • I have washed her underwear, we used fairy liquid and my sister bought her some cheap "time of month" underwear to use.

very imformative post above and I am learning this, she is an amazing girl, or should that be young woman, who is handling this better than I am, she has never said I need mam (she calls her mam) or asked for her, she trusts me totally, hence why I do not want to let her down.
  • To the poster who apologised for talking about losing virginity. It is no bother, I took her mothers virginity and she used tampax, as a bloke I never really knew anything anyway and was too concerned with counting to 100 before I let us both down. how any young man had any other thought other than please let is last is beyond me

See I feel more relaxed now ha ha

though of course my daughter will be 30 and married so it wont apply to her

(sorry if this offends, humour is my way of dealing with it, I do not expect her to be 30), only 29

You are not letting her down at all. I would text your ex and tell her "DD has started" then add she's okay but you are feeling a bit lost. Her mum will want to know and talk to her. It's quite a milestone in a girl/mother's life!

has she not had periods covered in school sex education lessons yet? DD's school covers it in year 7. Mind you, maybe she's forgotten the lesson as it didn't apply to her then.

If you're feeling overwhelmed OP, by all means contact her Mum or your sister (whichever your daughter wants) so she can have a chat with them before she goes on holiday and ask any questions she wants to ask.

You're doing brilliantly - my brother would have run for the hills by now.:)
Don't get too hung up about pad, tampons whatever and any further bleeding she has once this lot stops is likely to be spotting that's all. Just see how it goes and I'm sure once she's got over the shock you'll have a great holiday regardless.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.
