Comfy cushion - a savings diary

Hi all!
It's been quiet in here. Hope you're all busy saving.
My savings had a big (albeit temporary) boost this week as I inherited £10,000 from my grandmother. She passed away about 9 months ago and I had no idea I was due anything so that was a surprise. We're going to use it when we come to remortgage next year to get a better rate so I've stuck it in a Santander 123 account to accrue £20 a month in interest in the meantime! I've been meaning to open a 123 account as a household bills account anyway for the cashback benefit so that's worked out well. I've just got to hide or freeze the debit card so we can't spend it! Lol.
Out of my wage I've managed to replenish my pots a bit. Now have £193 in the holiday fund (NYC in December) and £250 in the car fund. We were hit by a UPS van last week and the car has £2200 worth of damage. The car is only worth £2400 so very close to being a write off! Their fault entirely so it's being dealt with by the insurance company but I'm still expecting a nasty rise in our premium come January.
Because of that and the fact I have nothing saved for Christmas and nowhere near enough saved for New York I've got 5 overtime shifts this month. I should be able to squirrel £1000-£1200 out of my Oct/Nov/Dec wages. Hopefully that'll cover the car insurance in Jan, and the spending money for Christmas and NYC.
I'm really looking forward to Christmas and New York but part of me just wants it to be January so I can start saving every month for Christmas and holidays in 2014 to avoid this frantic scrabble I have every October! :rotfl:
Keep savings peeps!

EVERYTIME i try and save up some money, something wipes it out!
Car in for it's MOT today, which it failed in spectacular fashion...£400 to fix it! Thats my savings gone, plus this weeks wages, plus having to put a bit of my Credit Card!
Trying desperately to think positively (it could have been worse, at least i have some savings) but getting a bit p*$$ed off now. I dont have a choice though, i need the car for work.
Sorry, rant over!
Sorry to hear that it cost so much to get sorted for the MOT. I'm guessing that it is an older car so one thing you maybe could be thankful for is that you're not losing money in depreciation.
A new car may have less visible bills like repairs but will likely cost thousands more in depreciation which is invisible until you come to sell.
So although the repairs seem a lot you are probably still saving a lot of money over buying new. Anyway hope you manage to fix the hole in your bank balance fairly soon.Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.0 -
Morning All
I have managed to save £250 now. I am also getting some money from work on Monday, for petrol. They always try and get me clients within a 5 mile radius of my home, but pay me 75p a mile when i go further than that.
I have no idea how much i will get (my estimate is about £20) but that will go straight into the savings account.0
