I'll get flamed for this....Tax reasons maybe and a nice day trip away somewhere....My nearest is 40 miles away that's a £18 mileage expense....

And an audit will have you paying fines and extra tax PDQ

Hi folks - just a quick hello. Following the advice at the beginning of this thread I'm in the middle of signing up with some mystery shopping companies. Did my first shop today and have submitted my report, hopefully all in order.

I work near a busy shopping area and have a pretty flexible job, so I'm hoping to pick up a few opportunities close by. I'm already recognising that travelling any distance to MS will dramatically reduce any returns.

Why? Mileage is an acceptable expense against a fee. If the fee has to exceed the mileage cost incurred then it would only get me a couple of miles away from my home address in which no shops at all exist.
    :footie:
:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

I sometimes have problems getting into Gap. I think there is something odd about their site.

Try going back to the language selection page, click on English, this reloads the next sign-in page.
    (sometimes works for me)

BG, is this true mate? It's just that I do quite a bit of travelling for my MS jobs and, consequently, accrue a lot of mileage, which is tax deductible.

I'm not undertaking any tax avoidance or tax evasion, all my mileage claims are just for MS jobs, so if I was audited, would I get fined?

Depends if you can argue that it was good for your business to do that mileage.

Say hypothetically that you travel 80 miles away to do a job where the brief expects you to pay out twice as much as the reimbursement for a fee that is less than £5.

Minimum net loss on paper is -£31.

What would be your response to the tax man as to why did you did the job?

Would you say it would be ok for me to claim an 800 mile round trip to visit Big Graeme as long as I pick up a couple of mystery shops whilst I'm up there? It's a fine line between bending the rules and taking the p*ss.
  • It may be the case that some jobs that others frown upon are being snatched up at the moment, as they've just done a major drive at Fresher's fairs around the country. There's been quite a drive online via student sites also, and they perhaps see it as a chance to go out cheaply or pick up some cheap groceries.

A dream doesn't become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination and hard work

Hmmm, I live in the country, and my nearest jobs are a 20 mile round trip. So are you saying that, if I have one job on, I can't undertake it if it pays less than £9 as I'll be making a loss?
