    Thanks for your advice.

To quote the bible it says ask, feel believe - what limits come with this quote when praying?

Not sure what you mean when you say 'limits'. However, off the top of my head a few scriptures:

    Ask
    Matthew 21:22
If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer

    Feel
    Colossians 3:15
And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful.

    Believe
    John 5:24
Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life.

Oh and before I go, one of my favourite scriptures. Actually it means a lot to me for personal reasons.

Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened. Matthew 7:7-8

I love the light relief you bring to threads. God knows this one could do with some (pardon the pun)
Sometimes intervention doesn't have to be divine! ;)

No Judi's not a minister, but has been described as a leader of men! (Well she misleads me sometimes! ;) )

I could accept one or two comments but the never ending comments from atheists is astounding - I would have thought this thread would be of little interest to atheists.

Could it be because a lot of people ARE atheists or non believers in God? They are commenting about the efficacy, or otherwise, of prayer. I think 'prayer' was the title of the thread.

To be fair, a debate was not what the OP requested. They asked for specific examples of where prayer had resulted in a positive outcome. Most of the believers have come up with wishy-washy statements about how God might or might not provide answers - but I don't think anybody has yet provided convincing evidence that prayer on its own can effect the outcome of an event.

None of the believers have bothered to comment on the scientific studies cited that show intercessional prayer has no influence on the outcome of surgery. From this I can only surmise that they agree with the outcomes of the studies.

In general, the advice to the OP boils down to a choice between:

    a) Keep on praying and God will (eventually) provide you with the answers you need. In the meantime twiddle your thumbs and do nothing.

    b) Get off your butt and take some pro-active steps to improve your life.

I thought most believers were saying that you should do both except that you should be asking God to help you do the b) rather than to give you "answers".

How so? There are superb works of fiction and non fiction that have been inspiring children for generations. That adults can appreciate and acknowledge the benefits of these has nothing to do with a dumbing down of society at all. Children are actively encouraged to read extensively in order to broaden their horizons and stretch their minds.

The Harry Potter books are poorly written, totally derivative and vastly over hyped. I'm glad that children enjoy them because I'm happy when children read anything, but intelligent adults should keep a sense of perspective about their actual worth.

Nobody can tell another person what they can and cannot get out of reading books. Perhaps you just didn't understand them?

Oh I'm so glad you've said that! My husband, myself and our son can't stand them. We thought we were the only ones!

Tried a couple of the films too but couldn't care less what happened to any of the characters, so gave up. :)

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton
  • Yes. Long story short, I saw Jesus in the lives of two Christians and wanted what they had. One of them prayed for me and slowly but surely God showed me he was real.

No-one was more amazed than me.

If you want a more lengthy story, pm me and I'll send it.

How did he show you he was real?

You'll need to read my longer version. PM me if you want to (although it's on my other computer so won't be able to send it until Sunday).

There's no point giving half a story. It makes it look like it didn't really happen.
