Prayers

Yes someone could pray for help to use logic and develop strategies. They aren't going to get an answer though are they! They are basically sending up thoughts and questions to something that has never been proven to exist. As an atheist praying equates to talking to thin air as far as I am concerned. Not a constructive way to seek help at all.
If you read another post of mine further up the thread you will see that I recommended that the OP did see a counsellor. A person in the flesh, especially trained to guide and help develop strengths in people to enable them to deal with life's troubles. I am also far from being negative about people seeking help from folk on MSE. I wouldn't come onto this forum and read and give advice if I felt negatively about people obtaining views and opinions in this manner.
So, wurbling to random people on a forum is helpful but communing with God (or simply with your own thoughts if you don't believe) isn't? I won't get into my views on most counselling!0 -

At least you get answers on here

I think quiet time to reflect and plan is very helpful and do this myself on a regular basis. I have no belief in god, so the thought of praying to something that has never been proven to exist seems pointless to me. I don't see coming on to MSE as wurbling with random people. A few people on here I know outside of this forum, others on the whole I find to be very balanced and intelligent people, with interesting perspectives and view points. You always get the odd one who mumbles on and is just out to prove a point but they can easily be ignored, just as in real life. The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own, no apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on or blame. The gift is yours - it is an amazing journey - and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins.0 -
Why are people who clearly have no belief on here with their views? I could accept one or two comments but the never ending comments from atheists is astounding - I would have thought this thread would be of little interest to atheists.
In relation to quoting Harry Potter, I believe the author is a Christian and some of the quotes mentioned (although obviously not all) have their roots in the bible.0 -
Because there's been some good debating started?
Because the only way to improve your life is to take control and not wait for an invisible being to drop it in your lap?
Because HP is more inspirational than the Bible? EDIT: more inspirational to me.

Well, we're a mixed bunch and everyone will have an opinion.
If I start a thread asking whether anyone has any tips on how to maximise the amount of money the tooth fairy leaves per tooth, I'd expect to get plenty of comments from people who don't believe in the tooth fairy letting me know that I'm barking up the wrong tree (in their opinion).0 -

Why start a thread on a open money saving website if you want spiritual advice? I'm sure there are christian forums where only like-minded people will reply. I find it astounding that a person of faith would expect everyone else to withhold their views on a non-religious website.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -

Why is it pathetic? An atheist finding a book that was written by a Christian inspirational?
And how un-Christian of you to start slinging personal insults around.
Not sure how I'm twisted.

It would be a pretty narrow discussion and debate if only those who have faith and belief in god participated. I thought people came onto this forum to take on board perspectives from all angles, and to dig deeper into the ideas they are discussing. By doing this you can attempt to move beyond your own thoughts, and to consider and discuss the opinions raised. The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own, no apologies or excuses. We are because it is still a free world and this is a public forum where anyone can post and as for the thread title it is simply "prayers" it could have just as easily been a fellow atheist posting asking what the point of prayers are.
As for JK Rowling she has publicly spoken about it many times and has admitted to going through periods of feeling deeply drawn to religion and other periods of atheism. She has said she likes the idea of religion and certain beliefs but finds churches (or other places of worship) full of overbearing people who take away the enjoyment and lead her to question and doubt.
She has admitting to being extremely confused and it's an ongoing internal battle of belief and non belief.0
