Your sons Yahoo account is safe. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
It only says that they're extending the time, not cancelling the changes.
So, in a few months time when they do finally change over, you'll be sitting smug whilst others rush round like headless chickens.
They have probably realised the chaos they have caused.0 -
They changed the closure date to 30th September on website, now that has been removed.
They have probably realised the chaos they have caused.
No sensible person actually uses a free ISP provided e-mail account for their main e-mail address!
There are many other alternatives which do not prevent you from easily changing your ISP to get a better deal.

espresso you insult all the 'sensible' persons who've posted and also appear to miss the point of this thread.
This issue isn't anything to do with trying to change ISP.
Most people who've posted on here (and on the posts I've read on BT forum) signed up to a talk21 email address about 12-15 years ago - very early days in internet history. My first ever ISP offered talk21 email via BT though BT was never my ISP. I changed ISP after the first year on the internet and have changed ISP several times over the years and talk21 became my main email address.
For several years now BT have used Yahoo for talk21 accounts. To avoid problems with hacking etc that Yahoo email has had, BT announced at very short notice that they'd be deleting talk21 accounts.
Most of us have used these email accounts for many years we have had to make a quick decision about what to do, wasting so much time when BT have now decided to postpone the changes.0 -

I have not missed the point of this thread. I personally started using a Talk21 e-mail account long before BT took over the company and I can still access it today although probably not for much longer.
This does not worry me, as I have only used this account for junk mail/registering on certain websites etc. and have several real e-mail accounts that I use.
BT is not the first ISP to remove their 'free' e-mail service, which was only provided so that gullible customers who knew no better would be tied in to that ISP, and it won't be the last. Most users find informing all of their e-mail contacts of new addresses a recusance but this is completely avoidable with a little forethought.
O2 is the latest to announce that they will be closing e-mail accounts for all customers from 1 Nov 2013 - more here
A similar thing has happened over the years with 'free' webspace provided that used to be provided by ISP's, which is now a thing of the past.
Nobody was ever guaranteed 'free' e-mail for life, so get over it, move on and learn from your mistake! Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
I don't see what the beef is here TBH, just get a hotmail/gmail or whatever account. Not a big deal is it?{Signature removed by Forum Team}0

Your 'yahoo' is absolutely fine, no change at all. Also, BT have just had a change of heart, and will NOT be deleting their old email accounts now for another year. (all users of the email addresses concerned will get confirmation of this within the next 10 days). I get the feeling that in a years time, they'll quietly forget the whole 'payment' issue. They've had alot of adverse publicity over this.0 -

With respect, I feel you really have missed the point here. When 'talk21' was launched, it was NOT connected to an ISP - it was a 'free for life' web based email address. We were not gullible for signing up to it - in 1997, there was nowhere near the same choice there is today - we were pioneers! As ISPs were going bust every month, it was a very conscious decision to adopt an email address that was not linked to one ISP, it was a true web based email system. It was equivalent to 'hotmail', or 'gmail'. That is why there has been such a backlash against charging for it.
It was launched as a 'free for life' email, and a communication base for the 21st century, hence the 'talk21' name.
It's just that because it was along time ago (I've had mine for 16 years) that there are not millions of people that would be effected. But make no mistake, if 'gmail' suddenly adopted the same stance, & demanded a monthly payment charge, there'd be a much bigger protest over the same principal!0 -

No it is you who is missing the real point!
Yes when Talk21 launched it was not connected to any ISP, however when Talk21 was taken over by BT and became an ISP email account, you could have changed then to an ISP independent email account - there was plenty of choice even back then or even had your own domain!
I have also had a Talk21 account for at least 15 years but when BT took it over, it became a web based only email account and you had to pay to use the account with an email client like Outlook or Thunderbird.
So I'll say again:
No sensible person uses a 'free' ISP provided email account as their main email account because you could lose it at any time as the whingers are now finding out and because it locks you to using that ISP.
Move on and learn from your mistake! Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -

Wow! Such an angry man, I've no idea why. You should really sit down mate in a quiet corner & compose yourself - this is no way to act on a public forum, and you could cause yourself a heart attack or something. Honestly - get a perspective. It's only an email address. Yes, I'm frustrated at the turn of events, but my goodness sir - get a grip... :beer:0
