Changing the BT email service - product closures
Our basic email services have now closed
Our basic email services closed on 14 April. These services include BT Basic Mail (also known as Talk21) and Pay-as-you-go (PAYG) @btinternet.com and @btopenworld.com email addresses.
If you're affected, we’ve already contacted you with the date of closure, and told you what you need to do to keep your email service.
If you haven't done anything about this yet, you need to do it as soon as possible. We're going to start closing things down in the next few days so we can't guarantee how long your email service will continue to work.
They'll probably restrict remaining accounts, see which ones are still active & give them bit more time to switch, to cover themselves, instead of receiving complaints from people who say they never knew.0 -
What about tomorrow and day, week, month after ?
I know last year they cancelled closure 3 days before planned date on 16/9/13 & sent notification email on 13/9/13
Do you have talk21 email address ?
I have btinternet addresses & moved them to BT Premium Mail Service.
Have you seen any information on Bts website which actually states a date for the cut of of Talk21.com & Btinternet.com email addresses? If so, can you please post the link on here?0 -

I believe the reason it kept working in September was because of issues with migration and they abandoned the change. I think they're serious this time and it might stop although my BTInternet.com email is still working at the moment. BT stated they are going to start closing things down in the next few days so they can't guarantee how long your email service will continue to work and therefore there is no definite date for anybody's account termination. we'll just have to wait and see like everybody else.0 -
I got hubby to telephone BT today regarding the closure of email addresses and the BT representative said to go to the following web address www.bt.com/premiummail and register for twelve months of free emails because they had started closing accounts since 14th April 2014. Emails will cost £1.60 a month from month 13 onwards if the account is not closed.

I had a weird and unnerving experience today. I have a btinternet.com address that was originally a PAYG account. We now have a BT Infinity package but still use the original address as our main email account.
I got the email that the OP thought was a spoof last August and I did the necessary to link the old address to our Infinity account to ensure it didn't get deleted. So I didn't think anything when I got the more recent email about the BT basic email accounts being shut down, as I knew I wouldn't be affected.
Late last night I emailed some files to myself that I needed at work today (including an important presentation), and logged in this morning to access them. They weren't in my work inbox, so I assumed that I might have forgotten to hit 'send' after attaching the files, but thought 'No problem, they'll be saved in my drafts folder'.
So I logged into my BT account, to be met with the chilling message that my account had been 'deactivated'. I genuinely panicked thinking of the implications of losing all my emails, and worried that just maybe I had not, in fact, successfully linked the old address to my active Infinity account. Or that maybe BT had abandoned the whole process they began last August and had started afresh, so I should have re-linked the old address to the Infinity account in response to their more recent emails.
The next hour was very stressful, as I contacted BT by phone. I was told that the address was linked, but several attempts at logging on using different PCs, laptops and mobiles were unsuccessful.
About two hours later, I finally managed to log-in using a colleague's mobile, which was an incredible relief, as the emails include numerous flight bookings, car hire confirmations and hotel bookings for our holiday in August, not to mention countless purchase receipts and so much other stuff. But any attempt to log-in via computers/ laptops was met with the deactivation message, and one occasion I was told my account had been 'barred due to abuse'. Another time I was met with the message that BT were experiencing technical difficulties and thanked me for my patience. It was just bizarre.
Eventually, around lunchtime, I finally managed to log-in successfully, and things appear back to normal now. BUT - weirdly - the files I emailed to myself last night have still not arrived in my work email inbox, although they are showing in the BT SENT ITEMS folder (from which I was able to access them in time to deliver the presentation).
The whole experience - after all this talk from BT about deleting old email accounts - was seriously unpleasant, and not one I'd wish to repeat.

Any suggestions about backing up all my emails?
Any important emails that I want to keep are moved from the server to a folder in email client.
These are then backed up with the rest of my data. I only leave the unimportant and run of the mill stuff on the server.
It couldn't be easier..One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.0 -
I am heartily sick of getting almost daily spoof emails from BT about my email account. I can't speak to BT because there's no number to call and they won't let me email because I don't have a BT broadband account!
It's maddening.
The emails look genuine but are from aol accounts usually.
I forward them to abuse@bt.com but they don't seem to be doing anything about it.
Any ideas/comments?
Thanks0 -

They can't do anything about it, because they don't send them. Look up the word "spoof" in a dictionary0 -

Did you try telephoning them to see what they say about the status of your email address?
