"I love it when I am alone and I turn everything off and the house is silent:o

So do I, maybe I have it. I cannot bear the radio on in the car or in the house for more than a few minutes, I hate the sound of clapping and the sound of someone blowing their nose irritates me too. I have to put up with them all though!!

I could happily punch anyone I hear crunching something (peanuts are the worst) unless I'm eating too and then it blocks the sound out.

Yes even saying all that I still don't think the OP is unreasonable or intolerant as she doesn't like hearing these loud noises! I wouldn't like it either, and I'm pretty sure most honest people wouldn't.

I never stated that the OP shouldn't take any steps to help herself, she will have to as far as I can see. The best situation here though is surely the family be rehomed when possible into a suitable building. How a 1 bedroom flat can be deemed acceptable is beyond me, yes a parent may need to be with the child at night, but surely taking turns and giving the other parent a break would be very beneficial and having a 2 bedroomed place would meet their needs so much better, I'll admit to not being in the known with housing benefits but are they not entitled to a 2 bed room rate with 3 people living there? I think if this isn't the case it's appalling. This family could be under pressure worrying about the neighbours, the neighbours are stressed with the noise, nobody is happy. If they aren't entitled to a 2 bedroom place then the only answer I can see is the OP selling up and hoping she can find a buyer.
I wonder what would have happened if the ground floor tenant apologized for their friends behavior and explained the disability her child had and all the difficulties it entails. Most people would appreciate that, unless they are a total sociopath, and try to be more understanding.
That's what my neighbors and I do whenever there is a lot of noise and it seems to work out well.
