PN we are not generations apart in age. There weren't, by and large, too many differences in branded goods between central Scotland and the south of England at that time, I think.

    You may recall
    NSM cigarettes
    Ghost brand cigarettes (eg Nerit)
Coffeee and Chicory brands during the big shortage years
    Austrian wine before the scandal.
These aren't all amazingly well covered by the internet, which reminds me of its liimitations.

I'm 42 and I've worked under the assumption that PN is < 10 years older than me, although not much less than a decade.

I remember neither NSM nor Ghost Cigarettes and I started smoking in 1986. I do remember those cigarettes that were shorter than normal ones. Can't recall the brand although I smoked them for a while. It's odd, since I quit smoking it's like my brain has destroyed a lot of my memories of having smoked. Not all of it but plenty.

I remember the Austrian wine thing (anti-freeze to make it taste better: how terrible must it have been before if anti-freeze makes it taste better!).

Parents of friends used to drink Camp Coffee. Never tried it, no desire to. Chicory has 1 use IMHO: braised in the oven with ham and white sauce.

I still find braised or grilled chicory very, very bitter. I try and I try, I want to love it.

I like it raw in salads.

    White chocolate - sickly
    Milk chocolate - yummy
    Dark chocolate - most yummy

The coop does a fair trade dark chocolate with orange. It is very delicious.

Very delicious is our family phrase for things that taste good. There is no higher praise. It mangles very good and delicious and comes form a time when a very small DD was tucking into her 'nunch' and we cooed "is that good?" and she responded very clearly "werry delishus"

Today I am cooking a small venison haunch joint. Not done it for ages feeling rather lazy and do not want a recipe that involves pfaffing around.

    All suggestions welcome.

Oh and yesterday we impulse bought a dining table..the one we mulled over for a few months is no longer available ...we think that means not made any more. So we bought one in John Lewis ..with a sideboard.

We have never bought furniture in John lewis before. Matresses, household goods and curtain material....

We have to get rid of a pedastal desk to fit the sideboard in, but we [STRIKE]think[/STRIKE] thought it would give better utility. Things are going to look lighter and modern chez Spirit.

I love phrases that come from little people. We have lots in our family, things become ritualistic :)

I had that once, at Xmas at nan's.

I think I saw a TV chef cooking some the other day. He seared it in a pan, then roasted it..... I think.

I'd probably just stick it in the oven like a bit of beef.

I'm not sure they translate that well!

Sugar Puffs are "sugar posh", profiteroles are "sausage rolls"

If you can imagine that way that a grown up would tell a small child to apologise to another small child, "Say sorry to me!" was a very small DS's own interpretation of the rules when talking to us! That still gets used a lot in our house ;)

You must also say "wot you doooin" with a Black Country accent. We are not Black Country here, but the lady that ran DS's nursery was. Considering we'd only just moved from London, the day that a 2.5 year old DS said this is forever imprinted in my memory.

    :o

    +11

Still fit tho :) I was wondering if the reason you feel cold sometimes is because your metabolism is very low because you eat so few calories which is of course linked to super longevity and looking young .

I think we will have a traditional roast Christmas lunch this year but almost certainly goose rather than turkey which DW finds too bland.

    Hmmm.
I've just been offered 8 legs of venison from a local farmer for xmas. He wants £50. Do you think that's two dear?
    I think....
