By way of light relief:...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0

Actually, Granny (and Mama, and me and my siblings) are direct descendants - because although her step-father inherited it and his great-grandfather bought it, her mother and step-father were cousins, and the great-grandfather who bought it was a common ancestor.
There are other descendants, too, but Granny was among 'em.
Granny's mother started with name M, married and changed to W (Granny's deadbeat father) and then back to the same name M when she married her cousin....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -

Silvercar? Your son might be and expert in the underwear purchase iirc?neverdespairgirl wrote: »OH claims that only M & S do proper men's pants. But he buys his own, I've never bought men's pants. I have bought boys' pants, for Isaac, though. Does that count?
Mum has been on the phone this evening, telling me the saga of buying Dad some replacement pants from M&S. I think they're on the third type now ... one of them seemed to be anatomically impossible (or at least, he apparently couldn't work out how to extricate, er, those bits which needed to be extricated on a regular basis)This is my mother's idea of hallway / staircase decoration:
and a partially-laid Christmas dining table:
I love the way that the partially laid table already has a couple of bottles of wine on it. Priorities indeed :TPasturesNew wrote: »Michaels suggested that - but I don't understand how it can be a one off £20 and no more money ever......
I suspect that it's £20 until you've used up the allowed minutes / texts / data? Perhaps someone else can confirm - you're asking all the questions I will need to ask if I make the change you're doing!! (So thanks for doing so)

And people think complicated family relationships are a recent development....
That's a lovely story, though, NDG. Thanks for sharing it.Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.0 -
My ideal would be to have a real tree with roots, in a huge pot that could live in the garden during the year and come into the house for Christmas. We used to have a small one like that when I was a child. Some time in the next few years I'm going to get one of those. In the meantime, we have a cut one, and then LNE's fake one because DD wants it.
I really love the real trees (in gardens) that have lights in.No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0 -

When I see big/posh houses on the telly - stately homes, or Buck House etc .... I always think how 'lovely' it is, living in those big houses, that they've got enough rooms that when somebody dies they can still keep all their stuff and have stuff going back generations.... along with knowing where it came from.
My parents have nothing from their families. Although, having said that, I'd never know if a knick knack had come from her own grandmother (who brought her up) as my mum's not [a] somebody who remembers somebody who will tell you where it came from. Indeed, even if asked outright, my parents wouldn't answer a direct question about anything..... most frustrating.
Lots went missing when they last moved; I think they packed up everything in a hurry .... then, having unpacked it all, they continually took bits and bobs (weekly) to the local charity shops. So, things like the blue bowls that were always on the sideboard.... no longer exist. Stuff we remember from our childhoods just "disappeared".... yet my parents managed to retain all their worthless clutter and junk. I did keep 2-3 small/random items during the house clearance; I have the household small mantlepiece clock I remember from the 1960s, even though it doesn't work, estimated value (if working) about £10 - but I remember being asked to tell them the time from it when I was learning to tell the time.0 -

I agree that it looks decidedly odd. However, it's very popular. Most people take the view that, even if it turns out to be a Ponzi scheme, it's a good bet for £20. You'd pay more than that for a decent package for 2 months at Giff Gaff. I just wouldn't transfer your number to Ovivo, as you might not get it back if they collapse. No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0 -
Another vote for M&S underpants.
Especially the pure cotton "cool and fresh" boxers0 -

Ergo - I probably have to give Ovivo a miss then!
While I could give friends my new number .... the number's out there with others over the years. CVs, old employers, old/random 'friends', old online friends, just 'everybody'.0
