    I'll swap you.

No, doesn't sound like my idea of fun.

Still sounds more appealing than my epic though!

Sounds like chimney needs pointing.... everybody gets that, then we buy the house and never have the chimney repointed.... :)

We had that. First windy night and a lump of brick fell out of the chimney onto the driveway; we moved repointing up the priority list.

We're now doing the "Oh god, what does he need to take with him" thing, the list seems so blooming long!

We have stuff left that DS1 returned with from uni, that DS2 never seemed to take with him. They need a quarter of the stuff they think they do. Unless they are particularly keen they are unlikely to do much cooking from scratch, so half your kitchen essentials are not essential at all.

Barbican - a 1960s - 1970s concrete complex in the north of the City of London, with a fantastic selection of theatres, cinemas and exhibitions, and very high towers that look the twin of nasty council tower blocks around the country, but command an astonishingly high price and a service charge that would make you weep (many thousands of £ per year).

The Barbican is great, it even looks nice if you look through the right eyes. It's Britain's finest example of Brutalism.

The worst thing about living there is the fact that the freeholder is the Corporation of London (the City of London Borough Council if you like). That means that they can't have a sinking fund (AIUI) as they are a council. That means that if you are in a low rise flat then you will have to pay £40,000 every 15-20 years to replace the lift in your block. The Corporation at least splits that over 2 years to make the additional service charge 'only' an extra £20,000 a year.

You get quite a lot for the service charge though: rubbish collection from the door every week day, huge and beautifully maintained gardens, tennis courts, cricket nets, basketball court/5-a-side football court. Plus you have the LSO playing in the auditorium a couple of times a week, an art gallery, a huge library and a very lovely (and largely unknown) glasshouse.

You don't get sound coming through the walls or floor (you do a little through open windows in summer but generally people are considerate and times that builders can work are heavily restricted). You're generally well away from the roads: I get far more road noise in my current house in a quiet Aussie suburb than I did in the Barbican.

The only real negative is that the under floor heating system has an 'on day' and an 'off day'. A cool day in April and you're freezing, an Indian Summer and you're boiling.

The really lovely thing is that you can live a hectic city life Monday to Friday and then at the weekend everything's quiet.

    Me too.

DD has announced her word count as 7501. 15000 needed...by 12th Sept.

I am saying nothing. Absolutely no "nagging", "coaxing" or superficial encouragement. I am still trying to get over MissK aspiring to "shine the t*rd" an expression I had never heard before. Nikkster and MissK I have learnt so much from you that is helping me to be a better mum.

In East this morning I bought two new dresses http://www.east.co.uk/crepe-dress-red/ in red and in black for me, and from their sale (MSE) bought DD a pair of sandals and colourful straw bag which she seems pleased with.

My PN box has some space now.

We always suspected that the only PMs you were really interested in were the ones from PN. ;)

I have various things in my attic. When LNE left, I kept all the kitchen stuff and he got more for himself. Now all that is mine. If there's anything James needs, Sue, please let me know and I'll see if I've got whatever it is. :)
Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. (Link permitted by forum team)

Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.
