Happy Birthday CK. Hope you've had a good day!

I had a lovely meal yesterday evening at Betty's with a couple of friends. It was really to celebrate one of them handing in their PhD thesis, but I think I'll secretly also call it my birthday treat for next week as I've nothing planned (and it's not a significant one).

Once your parents start dying, you suddenly see an "end point" and they all become significant!

Meh, I have blasted through my presumed end point, but I still don't really care. Don't like big ones though. I find in stupid I don't like then, they don't change anything after all .

I am hoping for the best, but anticipating you will not be able to do it due to:

    Fire risk.
    A lack of terracotta pots.
Other sound PN reasoning why being cold is a better option.

Here such a contraption would mean the dog or the cat would cause all to be toast.
Seen that a few times - yeah, massive fear of fire ... and no pots.

You wouldn't believe my fears ...... here are a few:

1] Studio flat I lived in - never turned on the immersion heater to heat the water (in 2 years) as I was petrified of it catching fire.
2] Same studio flat - had storage heaters. Never used them once in 2 years as I was petrified of them ..... catching fire.
3] All ovens - can't have more than 2 rings on at a time (2 is pushing it) - fear of overloading electricals and it starting a fire.
4] All ovens - scared of turning the oven on, turning it on too high, turning it on for a long time. Frightened it'll cause an electrical fire.
5] Here, daren't turn on the microwave and the kettle/toaster at the same time - fear of fire.
6] Here - daren't turn on the toaster and kettle at the same time - fear of fire
7] Here - every second the gas boiler's running I am anxious and listening/smelling for any changes in case ... yep, it's caught fire.
8] All showers, including here, scared of electrocution the minute I turn it on .... scared to use it too long in case it causes a fire. Daren't stay in the shower too long in case it's started a fire in another room that the cable passed through.

    :)

Because open plan living is supposed to be what everyone wants. You are supposed to want to be able to socialise with your friends while you cook for them. Indeed, lots of people do like that, which is fine for them, but not so good for the people whose lifestyle doesn't lend itself to that sort of thing who are looking for a flat.
Best only in lifestyle programmes where people have a big new open plan kitchen/diner at least 20' square and a good extractor ....

Doesn't really work in a room 15'x9' max.

I'd love to do something that brought fun to people.
Chocolate fountains and helium balloons seems to do that :)

I don't think it often works.

    Big rooms......cold
More than one person....oppressive when you want space
    Cooks......smell gets everywhere
Entertainment. ....actually need decent speaker set up, because you can.t hear tv / radio in other parts of space otherwise unless its demeaning at base place.
No where to close door on mess.
Nowhere to go....when you are / stuck in a lot the zoning of a house can really help.

Think it looks stunning. Just apart from pied a terre wouldn 't consider it.

Flat hunting with parent. I feel like goldilocks, one was too small, one was too dark, one was just strange, one was in the wrong position, one faced the wrong way.....grrrrr!

What is the obsession of putting kitchens in the lounge of flats? Doesn't work if you want lots of cupboard space in your kitchen and room for an american fridge freezer. I would understand if it was flats aimed at the young market who live on take aways, but for older folks who want to cook, it really doesn't work.
There are actually some nice places close to where I live for older people. Some odd "lifetime tenancy" deal .... for over 60s only so I can't get in there :)

When I had a quick look, before dismissing, flats the other week, I looked for garden flats and they seemed to mostly be in older converted properties, giving better room sizes and less of this modern "squeeze a bit of kitchen into the lounge" nonsense.

No idea where you're looking, and no idea of where's good/bad.... but, here's one (sold) that'd look viewable: http://www.needaproperty.com/property/for-sale/St-Albans-AL49JE/1-Bedroom-Flat-4435323

Except it faces the wrong way as the garden's in shade.

What about the time that isn't enforced fun? Do you know what I mean? People who work in card shops don't look especially happy.

I'd like to have something where people could choose a bit of happiness, regardless of the day. A realt lovely ice cream shop probably fits the bill; good enough for people to ignore the weather. Unfortunately, children don't have much spare cash; they're generally the ones who would choose easily.
Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.
