Here, within a 20 mile, there's one 1-bed detached place, £189k.

It's in a bad area, it's small. If I wanted to live in that bad area I could get a big choice of 2-3 beds for that budget... e.g. same postcode, just £20k more is somethng bigger: http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-43695854.html0 -

I swear you lot invent new levels of poshness just to beat the others
I read that bit as meaning that NDG's cat lives with her parents...? (albeit that their house is a posh-alert all of its own)

PasturesNew wrote: »That's been for sale for donkey's years..... that one's OK, bit pricey for what you get though - and that's the trouble with this type of development/conversion:
♦ Overpriced for what you get
♦ Usually poor design decisions
♦ No garage, rarely much garden
1-bedroom places would seem best... but when you see them they're very inadequate and it's just as easy to find a 2-bed place that offers more. They are disproportionately expensive per square foot.
3 bed semis start at about £155k within 1/4 of a mile. Being "detached" in itself isn't the be all and end all, especially when you're being ripped off just for that word.
And that's why I will most likely not end up with a 1-bed place - because 2s and 3s offer more features, more choice, often cheaper.
Random pick, £177k for 3 beds: http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-43093379.html
When you buy that oneask them how they managed to get a pale coloured hearth on the fire place.

I have determined that when I retire I'll set up a cattery. The lazy beasts just sit around all day and don't eat a lot. They don't need to be taken for walks. You just need to have a charming bedside manner when the owners check their pets in and pretend to like cats. (I don't; I like dogs.) It seems to be money for old rope.
It's like a horse being free..... if you've got a £400k house/land, whereas you could have bought a £200k house up the road without the land.... that type of thinking.0 -
PasturesNew wrote: »Might seem a daft question, but I've never met people like you lot before ... this "2 degrees" lark.... I always thought you were all meaning "I did a 3-4 year degree course... twice". But I know you've got a Dr thingy .... so is "2 degrees" insider/shorthand for "I'm a Dr"?
Nope. I don't have a Dr. thingy (all gone quiet on that front, plucking up the courage to send an email saying 'hi'. Won't chase, but will mention that we'll be at the same event in a month's time). I put in most of the work towards one though
I did a degree in one science (undergraduate), got a 2:2 because I enjoyed going out A LOT. Realised I'd made it difficult for myself to continue in science so did another (MSc, postgraduate degree). Then was the PhD stuff, which is pretty much required to get to 'management' type level in science.0 -
When you buy that one
ask them how they managed to get a pale coloured hearth on the fire place.
Oh bruised bananas, I forgot to ask for you.
Reminded now.
Are you ok with the fact that the pale stone will get soot on it? Even with a could draw you'll probably get a faint darker patina over the fire.
For the flue issue that prevents inset ( which would probably still get light sooting ...yeah, i know it shouldn't but....) why cannot they use a metal flue liner and feed from the bottom then just do securing from top?
Pretty sure that's how our woodburner flue is....I'd look but cannot dip to peer up.....0 -

Using cardboard or paper doilies as stencil patterns......Mse or foolhardy? I just want to add a colour layer, no design in mind and board of looking at stencils which are really expensive....0
