Might seem a daft question, but I've never met people like you lot before ... this "2 degrees" lark.... I always thought you were all meaning "I did a 3-4 year degree course... twice". But I know you've got a Dr thingy .... so is "2 degrees" insider/shorthand for "I'm a Dr"?

In my case, yes. First degree 3 years full-time. Doctorate three years full-time followed by another two and a half years part-time while earning a living.

Would a maisonette be more suitable - your own front door with letter box. And a level of privacy that means you don't have a communal hall.

A maisonette would be better than a flat, but really PN needs a whole house to herself. Preferably a detached one, even if tiny. She's not temperamentally suited to sharing buildings.
Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. (Link permitted by forum team)
Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

Hate flats, hate maisonettes. Land's not yours, service charges and annoying neighbours. For many normal and odd/bizarre reasons I need my own space. I can't live with other people's arbitrary rules - tried it before, it never works as the rules are changed/bent to mean something different over time. Plus, I want my own parking/drive. I want to be able to drive up to my door and unload any stuff.... and leave the car where I want/when I want - and not to have to juggle stuff from an allocated parking space (that might have been nicked) - and have issues with rude neighbours parking in it, or parking over the line, etc.

It's rare to get parking here as it is .... so many flats/maisonettes have one allocated parking spot - one's not enough! One's crazy.

And, I hate knowing I'll have to go up stairs once in the door ... and I hate the thought of somebody over me.

And 1001 other reasons. "MY" place is what's needed.

You'd think, with me not having kids, that I could buy a house "anywhere" - and not have to worry about daft school catchment areas. Ah .... but ..... in order to live among people who are possibly more likely to be half decent, you still have to live in those catchment areas - as the other areas are full of the ferals from the cr4p schools.... and there's one round this way that's got the worst report in the whole country, so probably akin to Beirut at weekends, evenings, school holidays.

Out walking while away last week I saw the cutest 1 bedroom detached house. Clearly converted from what was once a garage, but done amazingly well - even had a downstairs loo.

    Grrr....

Cheese cake cracked. I really must get an oven thermometer one day. I made a bad choice with this oven and it drives me potty but at least if I knew what actual temperature it was it would help!

    Super posh alert!

I swear you lot invent new levels of poshness just to beat the others :)

I have determined that when I retire I'll set up a cattery. The lazy beasts just sit around all day and don't eat a lot. They don't need to be taken for walks. You just need to have a charming bedside manner when the owners check their pets in and pretend to like cats. (I don't; I like dogs.) It seems to be money for old rope. :D
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

That's been for sale for donkey's years..... that one's OK, bit pricey for what you get though - and that's the trouble with this type of development/conversion:

♦ Overpriced for what you get
    ♦ Usually poor design decisions
♦ No garage, rarely much garden

1-bedroom places would seem best... but when you see them they're very inadequate and it's just as easy to find a 2-bed place that offers more. They are disproportionately expensive per square foot.

3 bed semis start at about £155k within 1/4 of a mile. Being "detached" in itself isn't the be all and end all, especially when you're being ripped off just for that word.

And that's why I will most likely not end up with a 1-bed place - because 2s and 3s offer more features, more choice, often cheaper.

    Random pick, £177k for 3 beds: http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-43093379.html

I like this thinking, but the smell of cat food and the resulting cat poo is stomach churning. Nearly nothing smells that bad to me.
