We tried using the quorn chicken pieces as a chicken substitute in a stir fry - once was enough
Half and half with beef mince it is just about bearable. We always buy the lowest fat mince and then pour off the fat when it is frying.
Dw and the DKs are tyring to visit DW's sister in London but sadly didn't check the traffic news before they left and ran into an M25 closure until at least 6PM. As DW does not do driving routes she doesn't know even though the diversion is quite straight forward I think they are best off abandoning for the day, even if you can do the diversion the traffic is likely to be horrendousI think....0 -

Why do you eat something just about bearable? Why not just eat something else? Not a critism, just curiosity. I'd not try and do that as a routine thing every couple of weeks.0 -

Mostly because we eat meat pretty much every meal or be it generally chicken and mostly in small quantities, so it is an attempt to have a vegetable protein meal. We can't do nuts, don't really like eggs, do cheese sometimes but that doesn't seem like a more healthy option and I just don't like lentils/pulses/chickpea type things...I think....0 -

Um, amazing mother, and I'd definitely put Christian in there, but probably to your horror and but not one of the judgemental everyone else should rot types,. I'd also comment on your amazing people skills and ability to see things from other people's perspective.
No, you haven't overstepped anything IMO. It's just interesting to see how other people perceive us.
Christian is definitely part of my identity, so no, I'm not horrified by that. I'm quite chuffed that you perceive it as integral to who I am. It did occur to me to put it in, actually. I think the reason why I left it out was that I didn't want to impose it into a list that was mainly about the standard NP issues (mushrooms, science, Herts etc). I wrestled also with exactly what to put about my current single status, and considered both "single parent" and a brief description of what happened before plumping for "widowed (technically)". As to my alleged amazingness, I'm not going to agree or argue, but just smile and say thank you. As always, you say such lovely things.Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.0 -

Do you need the protein that day? Heinous to admit but we don't have protein every meal.
Fish? Veg without chickpeas and lentils.? Pasta with a veg sauce? Soups? Risotto?
We do like pulses, and often have houmous as a 'protein ' element with crudite as a starter.
I think part of the think about less meat / red meat is probably to get most people increasing fibre in diet.......
Rather than eat something I didn't like I'd personally have portion of real meat but with some beauful fresh steamed cabbage.0 -

Don't like eggs?
Pull yourself together man. What's a Friday without a bacon and egg roll in the morning?
How about a nice bit of fish if you want a protein meal without meat? Wrap a farmed trout in a bit of foil with some root veg, a tiny bit of butter and a dash of white wine to bake for 30 or so mins is yummy and cheap.0 -
I'm funny about eggs....I know, ironic huh? I'd never eat hue is rancheros for example, but eggs en cocotte are delicious and quick....not that healthy! But souffl!s are really underrated. I used to make souffl!s all the time, the are not difficult, they are not expensive....well, eggs are now I guess, but still....and they make the most of a a few ingredients. Tin of tuna, spring onions and wocester sauce makes an easy mid week souffl! with salad. Cheese and leek. White fish and lemon. Salmon and chives.. Two fillets of salmon would more than do a big souffl! for all of you michaels,0

DS doesn't like meat much, either the taste or the idea of eating dead animals. He thinks he's decided not to eat mammals, and gets most of his protein from fish. He eats tuna whenever the choice is up to him (in baguettes in the canteen at school and with pasta when he's cooking at home) but also eats chicken, especially in take-aways (chicken nuggets are his usual order if we go to the chippy, and chicken fried rice at the Chinese). He is still picking ham for going in toasted sandwiches even though he won't usually eat ham in any other context. I haven't pointed out that this is inconsistent, because if I do he will stop eating it in toasties as well as everywhere else, and I think he needs the protein. He's quite skinny, and doesn't have a particularly big appetite, and ought to be just about to start growing rapidly and eating mountains, but it isn't quite happening yet.Do you know anyone who's bereaved? I did long ago used to cook souffle but it is a bit of a faff and haven't done it for ages (pretty sure not since we have had kids).
I had forgotten about fish, we probably have white fish once a week and tinned tuna does feature at lunch times although I am not a fan personally. We used to do fish in foil but fresh fish is silly expensive.
I know you don't need protein (and specifically not a lump of obvious meat type protein) every meal but I guess you just get so used to it that a meal just doesn't feel complete without it.
I may do a souffle this weekend although my to do list means that spending time on cooking is probably going to be difficult.I think....0
