Big Diwali celebration was in London last weekend. However, Diwali is on 3rd Nov. I wonder if the proximity this year to Guy Fawkes is causing problems. A lot of big displays for that start this weekend too. I don't know about where anyone else lives, but here most Firework Night celebrations are at weekend, so scheduling must be a nightmare.

I thought the bit about the cat basket was poignant. Besides, you can't be a true NP until you've had your first posh alert from Pastures.

You're right about it marking. When we had one, I used to spary it with nice smelling oil for a shine and so it smelled nice when we were burning. I did find one in the end from a company that just does slate, but thank you :A

Don't do gas. Once you've had a real fire, they're a real let down. I'd rather compromise and have a different style.

Maybe an inset stove for something funky that no one else has? I like the 5660. It will still need a hearth - they photograph without, but building regs... You can have a hearth that isn't in pieces, I think.

Or Morso also do a freestanding woodburner that fits in the space of a modern house chimney breast. I'm struggling to find a link.

Silvercar, maybe you'd get away with retrofitting a stone surround around something in this manner?

    Fireplace !!!!!! :D

We can't have a woodburner without lining the chimney and that would cost a 4 figure sum on its own. But the regulations do allow us to burn solid fuels without lining the chimney. Plus we prefer the look of a real fire.

I just need to work out if the black granite is really necessary, surely white/ cream coloured granite is just as crack /heat proof as black. They did advise us that burning wood can be dirty, so we risk staining on a pale colour.

Pastures, where are you? You could be calling a Pretentiousness Alert here.
I was off totting up October's income as it's the end of the month and I like to know how short of paying the rent I'll be.

At first I thought you were on about kitchen worktops ... and the answer was "No" ... followed by a muttering about first world problems.

But then when you mixed it in with fire talk, I'm clueless as to where you'd be using granite.

Okay PN, I'll take that one on the chin. I've got degrees plural as well (but not all Science). Get it over with!

You might have missed this on the freebies board, http://www.trex.co.uk/2014calendar/

I'd get one except I've got a stupid outside postbox on the wall, next door.... and it's not big enough to receive a package like that .... so if I applied for it I'd be having to leap in/out for days on end until it arrived as it wouldn't fit so would be poking out .... and it'd, no doubt, be folded.

One advantage of having your own house is deciding how you receive your mail! Often in flats, annexes, etc, postal arrangements are less than desirable, often preventing the ordering of things or even registering your bank at your home address as mail's insecure/dodgy or unsafe to receive.
