If you'd closed the door and the electricity had been off for 3 days you'd be none the wiser.... always a worry.

The fix for that scenario is to place an ice cube in the freezer before you leave - if it's still there when you get back everything's OK.

That's a fail then. The ice sitting in the ice maker had completely dissolved and poured out through the ice-releaser thingumajig all over the kitchen floor. Puzzlingly there were random bits of ice amongst the water in the freezer.
    What a shame.....
I reckon the only thing you can do is go on a major cook-fest and cook anything that isn't 'off' then freeze all the results as 'ready-meals' for another day.

That is the problem, how do I judge whether the meat that has defrosted is safe to cook? It felt cold, but whether that was 4 degrees, 6 degrees or 8 degrees.

I was worried about the freezer being damaged, it made some noise like the fan had ice frozen around it. I blasted it with a hair dryer heard the sound of crashing ice and now the noise has gone.

Pn you are confirming something I have said for awhile, Americans are, ATM, streets ahead of us on the 'normal' price range home furnishings and fittings thing. I've found it with everything, including lighting.

I also think they in general are better at decorating than us. I love architectural digest, and while its 'international' its american really, and the inspiration in there is really so much better. Haven't bought it for years though. Last copy was a couple of years ago I think.

I love Restoration Hardware. Quite a few years back they were due to launch in the UK, not sure what happened, but their partner may have been MFI, can't remember... I Like Z Gallerie too.

For lighting, I love Arteluce. Especially this one, which would look ridiculous in my house, sadly:

Surely more of an anti-posh alert?!

    Not at all.....

From reading the previous descriptions, I'm quite sure that down PN's way only posh people have piped gas of any sort.

The ordinary folks will doubtless have to trudge many miles to the camping shop and buy a bottle, or at a pinch, collect fart bubbles from the bathtub.;)

Does it smell? The meat? Off meat smells, the colour isn't good and it has a sort of slippery feel. Smell comes first.

Did it feel 'fridge cold' or not quite?

Many thanks for the congratulations on my now owning a rather large house which would benefit from rather a lot of love.

I currently feel very small, but it also feels like I've just moved into yet another rented house. I guess that will change as soon as I hang some pictures on the wall ;)

I have had my first visitor - a colleague who exchanged on her house purchase today (must be a day for house news!). She looked at this house (I should really call it MY house now!) before me, but she said it was much bigger than she remembered and reminded me just how much potential there is (all I've been able to see is the vast number of things that need doing).

Someone said to me that it took her longer than expected to feel as though the house belonged to her. I think it took me far longer than it did for her, so if it does take a while that's really not unusual.

And take things at your own pace. People will say "what you want to do is ... ", and it can be easy to be steamrollered into making decisions before you've lived with the house for long enough to feel what the right choice for you is.

    Congratulations to the NDGs.

What joy and excitement, so much to look forward to.

    xxxx and cyber hugs

Thanks! I'm sure I'll be very excited soon. Actually, I already am, and <touch wood> not feeling as sick as last time. Yet.

    Wow, an eventful day's thread!

Congratulations to NDG and other half :T - hope you feel better soon. Must be awful if you don't feel quite right in court ...

You have to feel all right in court, really, you sort of borrow energy from later. Then collapse afterwards.

Today was busy - I did 2 full asylum appeals, and adjourned a third as a favour to the solicitor, and because asylum appeal #1 in court 4 ran from 10 to 1.50pm, had to start asylum appeal #2 at 2pm in court 6, which ran until half 4. I have late-night-emergency work to do now, and had to grab a kip in between getting home and now, because I was shattered.
The fix for that scenario is to place an ice cube in the freezer before you leave - if it's still there when you get back everything's OK.

Small container of ice (say, photo film cartridge) with 5p on the top for us. Trick borrowed from my Granny. Then if someone leaves the door open for a bit, you can tell, as the 5p sinks into slush.

That must be quite high on the annoying scale, silver. Was the culprit apologetic?

One of 4 siblings, and we own one property between us (mine and OH's flat in London). Are your siblings older than you, younger, or a mix, Michaels?

I told DH this evening I'm probably just going to get three faux Georgian lanterns and stick 'em up there. I'm bored now and borrow leads to boring choices.
