I just heard that some friends have gone off for a week of sex in the Quantocks, and I thought I should mention it here so as to give Michaels a chance for some more inyourendo.

Net cost to the govt of trying to withdraw my child benefit - 10k
That system's been no good for anybody. A HUGE overhead, that just subsides employers into providing low paid, part-time work to the masses.... costs the Govt a fortune.

It'd be better if they withdrew it all, many people would give up their part-time jobs, employers would have to pay proper wages ... and the end result would be back to one full-time job providing enough income for people to live on.

Without quoting, are we talking about pocket money amounts, or big chunks out of the bank account? It's high time that you or your siblings have power of attorney, if you haven't done that already.

I'm less worried about pocket money, even though it can be a form of abuse, as it ought to be up to the elderly to decide how to spend their money if at all possible.

AIUI the local authorities have a duty of care to safeguard vulnerable adults against any form of abuse. If you feel this is happening, please gather evidence and go to the authorities/police.

Unfortunately this does happen. My mum used to work in a care home and helped bust someone who was stealing from the elderly (taking their possessions rather than building trust). These people should be jailed, not working with vulnerable people and deserve to feel the full force of the law.

Don't be surprised if the place is also watching the person in question. In the systems that I know of, the 4x things will already have rung alarm bells. With a bit of luck they too are also watching like a hawk. Good riddance...

If everyone earning between 50 and 70k with kids does the same it may well be that they actually lose money by introducing the child benefit cut :)

Debating whether to fill the pool again, forecast is poor but it seems a shame not too as the kids are off. Perhaps we will just use it like a paddling pool and put in 8 inches of warm water each morning?

I doubt sufficient numbers would want to cut their income by such a chunk.

Yesterday's 8 inches of warm water will be cold by today.

Knew of similar, hawks watching....caught....repaid bits and home happy. Only after death found that jewellery was nowhere to be seen. Home claimed it was never worn in home and old had said that it was elsewhere for safe keeping.

So DS1 has started to move out. :(

Financially stupid move, but he wants independence. I suppose that is reasonable at 23. More annoying because he says he would happily live at home if we lived somewhere more trendy/ central.

Does seem an up and coming area ie trendy looking coffee shops interspersed with tramps.

Inspected house and it does look nice but shabby. Could do with a lick of paint but has new kitchen and bathrooms. Landlord has also replaced boiler and put in fire alarm system and extinguishers all over the place.

40 mins drive from here. I suppose it could be worse. DS2 is excited for him, but when he goes back to uni the house is going to be quiet.

Parents... harder to sort out than kids.

Different. We have had some scary moments with the kids, I think the difference is that you expect ups and downs with kids you also expect them to take over your lives.

DS2 knows of the kids who have come back from Zanzibar with acid burns. :(
