I solved the conundrum of how a PC running Windows XP could run on only 128 MB of RAM. When I opened it up to upgrade the RAM, I found that it already had 512 MB in it. :)

I find a clean install of XP works like a dream...until you get as far as service pack 2 after which even 1gb of ram is barely sufficient :)

'Fixed' netbook I think the fan is not working properly, it seems to get very warm but doesn't blast air out of the vent - I suspect this is what killed the first hard drive - for the moment I am limiting use to 30 mins at a time after which the cp, mobo and hd temps are too scarey.
    I think....

PN, I saw your posts about problems with a non-booting PC. I didn't wade in, because I thought you might be more concerned about your mum. If you are having all these issues burning CDs, can you make a bootable USB stick instead?
One of my first posts there said "I can buy a USB stick if that'll help" and they sent me down the CD route....

Nearly out of time now. If I can't achieve it I can't do any more until Xmas when I revisit.

You might as well borrow an external disk drive and burn it that way. At least that might work.

At least with macs there's startup disks you can find online that can do it. When I switched to OSX ages ago I had the last mac that took floppy disks and I made a repair disk that could start the computer, run Disk Aid and run a CD ROM driver so you could try other repair CDs if necessary. it was amazingly useful to be able to do that but now...:(
Can't borrow one, don't know anybody with one and time-limited.

I have been given a link and downloaded the relevant boot up disk, just can't burn it.

I've bought two packs of CDs from two different shops - and had 5 goes at burning so far.

Everything is waiting for an instruction, then trying the instruction, then failing, then updating thread and awaiting any next instruction - so hours/days are passing fast.

My parents commissioned a metal fountain - it is sort of loosely based on stems and leaves, the leaves are at the base of different sizes and each one vibrates at a different pitch when water lands on it producing a kind of atonal music when there is a light breeze. No idea what it cost but i suspect a lot less than the spheres which probably require chlorine in the water to stay clean.
That's taken Posh Alert to a whole new level!!!

I am much better at buying DIY bits than actually getting on and doing the DIY.

Stats you say? Depending on what your first degree is in I know a company that might be interested in receiving a job application from you after you finish your course.

Thanks M! Not counting my chickens at this stage though :p

That is quite a leap. Fantastic support and guidance from you will have been key but it makes me curious as to how he foundd it? What makes this prpspect feel comforatble for him and how can that 'translate' that into making his last years at school feel like that?

The how he found it is quite funny...middle son was feeling eek about a 6th form trip yesterday to a university (it was a getting to know each other trip rather than a visit to a uni), so youngest got the website up and started looking at it and telling middle the good points. He then started looking through courses and hey presto! He found the perfect course at their sister university in Cambridge (not THE Cambridge university).

My hope with that is it could make him more single minded focused on getting the grades at GCSE needed, to make it a reality. It's a long shot but it's all I have right now! :rotfl:
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

Uninstalled CD burner software as the tech board said, installed a new one... burning disc... it's been over half an hour now, I suspect it's frozen.

    Peeing down here.

    I've been Money Tipped!

    Peeing down here.

We had rain over night and this morning but its really beautiful now, a perfect late summer day. Cooler yes, but lovely.

I am beginning to panic that heating is going to be an issue again, the new company are playing silly beggars. I hope we am being overly cynical, But......at least this time they won't be starting work until we feel more confident.

I fear these wood burners are still not mainstream, and customers are being used as test sites for untried designs. Tact is not my no. 1 attribute and I shouldn't say this, but can you get a gas one fitted as a backup?
